Local roundup: Sea Unicorns drop FCBL playoff opener

Norwich — The Vermont Lake Monsters scored four runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Norwich Sea Unicorns 5-4 in their Futures Collegiate Baseball League opener Monday at Dodd Stadium.

The best-of-three series moves to Vermont for a 6:35 p.m. game Tuesday.

The Sea Unicorns, the defending league champions, scored single runs in the third, fourth, seventh and ninth innings, but were held to five hits by four Vermont pitchers. Kaiden Dossa (Yale) had two hits for Norwich and AJ Soldra (NJIT) doubled and drove in two runs.

Norwich right-hander Michael Belcher (Bryant) will get the start today against Vermont righty Wyatt Cameron (New England College).

    NL-Waterford Speedbowl

    • Eddie Gomarlo won his second race of the season in the 50-lap SK Lights race Saturday at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, with Tyler Barry second and John O’Sullivan third.

In the Late Model race, Jason Palmer broke free on a three-wide restart with three laps to go, outdueling Ray Christian III and last week’s winner, Doug Curry, for the victory.

In a pair of 25-lap Street Stocks races, Norm Root III took his second win of the season in the weekly race, while Ryan Lineham won the Open Street Stocks Division, controlling the race from the start. In two Mini Stocks races, David Dorr won the first after mechanical problems struck John Bavolacco down the stretch, while Bill Sylvia took the second with his first win of the season, with Bavolacco rebounding to finish second.

In the 40-lap INEX National Qualifier for the Legend Cars, PJ Evans was first, Zachary Martinez second and Jase Mongeon third, while Dylan Freeman scored his first career win in the Legends race, which ended under caution.
