H.S. soccer roundup: East Lyme girls open with a shutout
Ledyard — Emily Salek and Jessica Knapp each scored goals and goalie Sam Rodes made four saves to earn the shutout as the East Lyme High School girls’ soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory Tuesday over Ledyard.
Salek scored on an assist from Lilah Hart to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead at halftime and Knapp added an insurance goal on an assist from Kaylee Knapp.
Jess Dudley made nine saves in goal for Ledyard.
In other games:
• Hayleigh Young, Colbie Gisleson, Leah Burchman and Chloe Green all had unassisted goals for Norwich Free Academy in a 4-2 win over Haddam-Killingworth. Goalie Ava Boenig made five saves.
• Emily McKelvey scored twice and Phoebe Carpenter made three saves to earn the shutout as Lyman Memorial defeated Griswold 3-0. Avery Volle and Haley Cardinali added assists for Lyman, which led 2-0 at halftime. Paige Vreeland made 10 saves in goal for Griswold.
• Wheeler couldn’t capitalize on its scoring chances, losing to Westbrook 2-0. Lily White made three saves for the Lions.
Boys
• Nolan Muncaster scored twice and Noah Keenan added a goal and an assist for Montville in a 3-1 victory over Plainfield. Jayden Burrell made one save in goal for Montville.
• Ben Crowe scored four goals to power Ledyard past Fitch 5-1. Sean O’Brien also scored for the Colonels, while James Tweed added two assists. Felipe Dantas had a goal for Fitch.
• Brayden Weidner had three goals while Tyler Silva and Issac Rios each had two in Griswold’s 10-0 rout of Putnam. Gennaro Lavado chipped in one goal and five assists for the Wolverines and Anthony Undag had a goal and an assist.
• Nico Churis scored two goals and added two assists, lifting New London past Lyman Memorial 4-3. Yovani Sanchez and Erlin Almendarez each had a goal and an assist for the Whalers.
• Benjamin Syphrett opened the scoring in the 12th minute and finished with two goals and an assist in St. Bernard’s 4-0 shutout of Wheeler. Christian Tompkins and Aidan Cass also scored for the Saints. Timothy Regan earned the shutout in goal for St. Bernard, while Devlin McCusker finished with six saves for Wheeler.
• Waterford and NFA battled to a 0-0 tie in a physical game. Ben Ducbicki had five saves for Waterford and Kaiden Walsh made eight stops for NFA.
