    H.S. girls’ swimming / 2024 preview capsules

    Following are the 2024 high school preview capsules for girls’ swimming:

    ECC

    East Lyme

    Coach: Rob Bouchey (3rd season)

    Key returnees: Sr. Isabel Baggio, So. Elizabeth Goeschel, So. Madelyn Gonzalez, So. Katelyn Haynes, Jr. Nicole Ibrahim, Jr. Elsie Jacobitz, So. Danielle Kim, Jr. Jenna Levine, So. Peyton Maynard, Jr. Julia Morcos, Sr. Molly Newton, So. Sylvi Otter, Jr. Ella Pape, Jr. Jennifer Park, Jr. Phoebe Thomas, Jr. Ruby Thoms

    Top newcomers: So. Samantha Caldwell, So. Lena Coleman, Fr. Darcy Dombrowski, Fr. Emerson Newton, Fr. Madison Tucchio

    Outlook: The Vikings, who won their 23rd straight ECC Open championship with 564 points, are looking forward to an exciting season chasing continued success in the conference and Class M state championship meets. Levine (diving) and Pape (100 freestyle) are returning ECC champions.

    Fitch co-op

    Coach: Alison Colussi (4th season)

    Key returnees: Sr. Anna Orphanides (freestyle, butterfly), Sr. Jai-Lynn Wheeler (freestyle), Sr. Addison Fulling (freestyle), Sr. Ashlynn Dunn (backstroke), Jr. Kaitlyn Kumpf (backstroke), Jr. Jillian Arcilla (breaststroke), Jr. Lucy Doyle-Kusy (breaststroke), Jr. Lauren Bullock (freestyle), So. Haley Singer (freestyle), So. Audrey Schrage (backstroke).

    Top newcomers: Fr. Gabby Donnarummo, Fr. Olivia Nowak, Fr. Layla Caramante.

    Outlook: The Fitch co-op, which includes swimmers from Fitch, Stonington, New London and Wheeler, is led by its largest-ever senior class and will look to defend its ECC regular-season title. They continue to chase East Lyme for the conference championship after coming in second by 21 points last year. With a strong freshman class and 10 returning Class L qualifiers, the Falcons will look to test their depth against nonconference competition in Guilford and Cheshire. Orphanides, The Day’s All-Area Swimmer of the Year and the 2023 ECC Swimmer of the Meet, is the defending ECC and Class L champion in the 50 freestyle, while Kumpf is the reigning champion in the backstroke.

    Ledyard/St. Bernard co-op

    Coach: Katey Kokomoor (6th season)

    Key returnees: Sr. Thelma Grogan (100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle), Sr. Samantha Palmer (50 and 100 freestyle), Sr. Seidi Schiro (100 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Sr. Sophia Breslavets (100 freestyle, 100 butterfly), Sr. Julianna Cordi (100 and 200 freestyle), Jr. Catherine Perez (100 backstroke, 200 freestyle), Jr. Anna Kate O’Donnell (100 butterfly, 200 freestyle), Jr. Sunny Dudda (100 backstroke, 500 freestyle), So. Jules Ericson (200 and 500 freestyle).

    Top newcomers: Fr. Sarah O’Donnell (200 IM, 500 freestyle), Fr. Dakotah Sands (100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke).

    Outlook: After several years of low participation numbers, the roster is climbing. Ledyard/St. Bernard has a very experienced team with six seniors leading the way. “We are excited for this season,” Kokomoor said.

    NFA

    Coach: Cory Tubbs (24th season)

    Key returnees: Sr. Natalie Bezanson (IM, freestyle), Sr. Mercedes Aleksjukas (freestyle, sprints), Sr. JaLani Ithier (freestyle).

    Outlook: Bezanson is the reigning ECC champion in the 200 individual medley and Tubbs expects several freshmen will contribute to a successful season for the Wildcats. Senior team manager Mylinn Rivera keeps things organized and helps out during meets.

    Waterford

    Coach: Amy Poulton (2nd season)

    Key returnees: Sr. Julia Gathy (200, 500 freestyle), Jr. Hannah Blomberg (IM, breaststroke), Jr Zaya Haglund (IM), So. Luciana Juliani (IM, breaststroke), Sr. Victoria Matyakubov (butterfly, diving), Sr. Lauren Gerboth (200, 500 freestyle), Sr. Emily Roy (freestyle), So. Marlena Childs.

    Top newcomers: Fr. Kaelyn Barricklow, Fr. Aubrey Tucker.

    Outlook: Waterford is returning many strong swimmers and adding a group of newcomers. Poulton is looking forward to a strong season with a good showing and many swimmers making it to the state tournament in November.
