    Local roundup: Kumpf leads Fitch co-op past Ledyard co-op in swimming

    Ledyard — Junior Kaitlyn Kumpf earned swimmer of the meet honors by placing first in the 100 butterfly and competing on the winning 200 medley relay team in the Fitch co-op’s 89-72 win over the Ledyard co-op in an Eastern Connecticut Conference girls’ swimming meet on Friday at Vitale Aquatic & Tennis.

    Lucy Doyle-Kusy finished first in the 200 IM (2:39.38) while Haley Singer won the 100 freestyle (1:03.28) and Anna Orphanides captured the 100 backstroke (1:06.50) for Fitch. Jai-Lynn Wheeler (200 freestyle, 2:09.40) and Gabby Donnarummo (500 freestyle, 5:59.51) also won races.

    Seidi Schiro took first in the 50 freestyle (27.94) and Thelma Grogan won the 100 breaststroke (1:23.08) for Ledyard.

    In other meets:

    • East Lyme defeated Daniel Hand, 99-87, with Ella Pape leading the way with wins in the 50 freestyle (26.31) and 100 freestyle (57.88). Lena Coleman finished first in the 100 backstroke (1:15.58) for the Vikings (1-0).

    • Kaelyn Barricklow and Hannah Blomberg each won an event and were on a winning relay team as Waterford beat NFA 103-66 in an ECC meet. Barricklow won the 100 freestyle and Blomberg won the 100 breaststroke for the Lancers. They also combined with Aubrey Tucker and Julia Gathy to win the 200 medley relay. NFA’s Natalie Bezanson won the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Bella Bruno contributed 33 assists, eight digs and two aces in Griswold’s 3-0 shutout of Bacon Academy. Game scores were 25-14, 25-18, 25-17. Abby Matheson had 15 kills, seven digs and five aces for the Wolverines (1-0) while Kierra Nelson had 14 kills, four digs and a block and Carly Rubino added 11 digs.

    Maddie Meyer had 18 kills, Bailey Handwerk had nine kills and Jillian Snow added 15 assists for the Bobcats (1-1) and Dominique Sanchez chipped in 27 digs.

    H.S. boys’ soccer

    • St. Bernard and Norwich Tech battled to a 1-1 tie. Ben Syphrett set up Aidan Cass for the game opening goal and Norwich Tech’s Rowan McElwee answered early in the second half. The Saints are 2-0-1, and the Warriors 0-0-1.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Grasso Tech dropped to 1-1 overall with a 5-0 loss to Goodwin Tech.

    • Wheeler lost to Plainfield 7-1 on Thursday. Hannah Viele scored with an assist from Valentina Corrigan for the Lions (0-2).

    H.S. field hockey

    • Westbrook/Old Lyme goalie Grace Vincent made eight saves in a 1-0 loss to North Brandford in Shoreline Conference action. Bella Warren scored the game’s only goal. The Wildcats fell to 0-2, 0-1 in the conference.

    College volleyball

    • Allie Wildsmith had nine kills and Abigail Schweitzer added eight to help lift Coast Guard Academy past Rutgers-Newark, 3-0. Game scores were 25-13, 25-21 and 25-18. The Bears improved to 3-2 overall.
