    High school roundup: Waterford tops Bacon, gives Ghiglia his 200th win

    Colchester — Waterford High School girls’ soccer coach Chris Ghiglia earned his 200th career victory in style Saturday, watching his Lancers defeat defending state Class M champion Bacon Academy, 1-0.

    Paige Jessuck scored with 10 minutes remaining for the Lancers.

    “She cut inside and curled a shot into the far upper corner. Brilliant strike,” said Ghiglia, who won 97 games at St. Bernard and now 103 at Waterford, “I have been so fortunate to coach many wonderful teams over the years.”

    Victoria Sturm made six saves for the Lancers (2-0) and Liz Glover made seven saves for Bacon (0-1-2).

    In other games:

    • East Lyme beat Old Lyme 2-0 in a nonleague game. Acadia Evans and JuJu Guarraia scored goals, Cailin Delaney and Kaylee Knapp had assists and Sam Rodes made six saves for the Vikings (3-0). Olivia Kelly made eight saves for Old Lyme (1-1).

    • Abby Daniewicz scored two goals and Montville blanked Wheeler 5-0. Katie Koning, Nicole Hudson and Allie Kondash also scored for the Wolves (2-0). Maya Dessaules made 25 saves for Wheeler (0-3).

    • Lyman Memorial blanked St. Bernard 3-0. Emily McKelvey scored all three goals for the Bulldogs (2-1) and Avery Volle had two assists. Madison Scribner made nine saves for the Saints (0-1).

    Field hockey

    • Ellie Alexander, Katie Jamroga and Sarah Davidson scored two goals each as Waterford beat Valley Regional 7-0. Audrey Steward had a goal and an assist and Kaylin Johnson, Evie Bellos and Jamroga had assists for the Lancers (2-1).

    Boys’ soccer

    • Defending Class L state champion East Lyme moved to 3-0 on the season with a 7-0 win over Old Lyme. Evan Mullarney scored three times for the Vikings, while Callaway Scott, Caleb Trost, Ethan Legg and Ryan Wargo also scored.

    •Jon Dorunda scored in the 44th minute and Waterford edged New London 1-0. Ben Dubicki had five saves and posted his second shutout of the season for the Lancers (1-1-1). New London is 2-1.

    • Aiden Plante scored three goals as Griswold beat Tourtellotte 4-0 on Friday. Gennaro Lavado had a goal and an assist for the Wolverines (2-0).

    Volleyball

    • Wheeler defeated Norwich Tech 3-0. Abby Butremovic had 25 digs and eight aces and Elsa Kalwara and Carissa Manfredi had eight service points apiece for the Lions (1-0). Norwich Tech is 1-1.

    • Waterford blanked Hand 25-17, 25-15, 25-9. Danica Agsalud had 17 assists, Jennifer Macca Barnes had 11 kills, Brielle Kenney had three aces and six digs, Ava Majeski had 11 digs and Lucy Walker and Addison Mobley had seven kills each for the Lancers (2-0).

    • Westerly defeated Fitch 25-12, 28-26, 20-25, 25-23. Leilani McCoy had 10 blocks, Natalie Helme 22 digs, Abby Malone 12 digs and Emma Main 12 assists for Fitch (1-2).

    • Mackenzie Payne had 19 assists and two kills as Montville beat Windham 3-1 on Friday. Zoe Molnar and Payton Jones had seven kills each for the Wolves (2-1).

    • Norwich Tech beat Grasso Tech 3-1 in a Connecticut Technical Conference match on Friday that was the season opener for both teams. Nyomi Barboza had 11 kills, Olivia Luurtsema had eight assists and seven aces, Rose Johnny had nine assists, six aces and five digs and Abby Ulrich had four kills, two blocks, seven digs and five aces for Norwich Tech, which won 23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16.

    Cross country

    • Norwich Free Academy won the Large Division boys’ title at the Stratton Brook invite with 55 points. Senior Patrick Croughwell led the team with a third-place finish (17:02) followed by Jesse Croteau in sixth place (17:29) and Anthony DeBartolo in seventh place (17:31).

    NFA’s Karina Chan won the girls’ race for the large division by a 90-second margin, winning in 19:35.
