    Local college notes

    Tyler Fidrych (Stonington), who previously attended UConn, is playing a graduate season for the Babson College men’s soccer team. A midfielder, he started the first three games.

    • Stonehill College junior Jordan Malloy (Bacon Academy), finished a career-best second out of 86 runners at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational on Saturday at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I. She crossed the line in 18 minutes, 21.8 seconds, and helped the Skyhawks place third overall.

    Also at Stonehill, sophomore Ryan Claffey (Bacon Academy) is a reserve goalie for the men’s soccer team.

    • Senior Emily DeRoehn (Old Lyme), who earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference defensive player of the year and first team all-conference honors in 2023, is off to a fast start for the Johnson & Wales women’s soccer team. DeRoehn scored a goal in a season-opening, 3-2 win over Babson on Aug. 30 and then had two goals and an assist in a 4-0 shutout of Elms on Wednesday.

    • At Springfield College, junior Meredith Healy (East Lyme) set up the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over No. 21 Williams on Sunday. Healy’s seventh career assist led to Natalia Mottura’s goal in the 81st minute. She has started all three games this fall.

    Seniors Blane Hart (East Lyme) and Cameron Hart (East Lyme), sophomore James Green (Ledyard) and freshman Jose Rivera (New London) are playing for the football team. Blane rushed for 57 yards and accounted for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Cameron had 11 tackles, including two for loss, in a 38-32 win over Western New England on Saturday.

    • For the third straight year, Natalie Gray (Stonington) is a starting defender for the Nichols College women’s soccer team. Freshman defender Cassie Rice (Ledyard) has appeared in one game off the bench.

    • Sophomore Katie Touhy (Fitch) has appeared in four matches for the UMass Boston volleyball team.

    • At WPI, sophomore defender Jess English (Ledyard) has started all three games for the women’s soccer team. She was named to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference second team as a freshman.

    Tim Lynch (Fitch), a junior midfielder, played all 90 minutes in the Endicott College’s 4-1 loss to Plattsburgh on Sunday. Freshman Peyton Luther (Ledyard) had his first career assist in a 3-0 shutout of Keene State on Sept. 7 and first career goal against Plattsburgh. Junior back Billy deCastro (Stonington) has appeared in one game.

    • At Assumption College, senior Delaney Farinha (NFA) registered an assist in a 3-0 win over Daemen College on Sept. 6.

    Logan Chappell (Griswold), a fifth-year defensive back for the UMass Dartmouth football team, freshman defensive back JJ Torres (Ledyard) and senior Mike Vincent (Waterford) each finished with one tackle in a 64-24 win over Nichols College on Saturday. Senior wide receiver Antonio Brown (Montville) had one catch for eight yards and freshman linebacker Devon Edwards (Fitch) assisted on a tackle while senior offensive lineman Tyler Gmyr (New London) also saw action.

    • Sophomore Kennedy Holsapple (East Lyme) helped the St. Michael’s College women’s cross country team to a second place finish Saturday at the Saint Anselm’s Shacklette Invitational in Manchester, N.H. Holsapple placed 11th overall in 27:16.1.

    • At Eastern Connecticut State University, sophomore midfielder Nico Matteucci (Bacon Academy) and sophomore defender Reid Dowling (East Lyme) have appeared in the first three games for the men’s soccer team.

    Freshman forward Brooke Bolles (NFA) scored two goals in a seven minute span in the women’s soccer team’s 3-0 win over Fitchburg State last week. Senior Olivia Davidson (Waterford) helps anchor the defense.

    Senior Dylan McGuire (NFA) was the third best finisher for the men’s cross country team at the Trinity College Bantam Invitational Saturday at Wickham Park. McGuire took 29th in 17:21.40 to help the Warriors finish sixth out of 11 teams.

    Sophomore Sophie Ash (Fitch) is a forward on the field hockey team while freshmen Zofia Maziarz (East Lyme) and Ava Korineck (East Lyme) are newcomers to the program.

    Aaron Muncaster (Montville), a junior midfielder, is a starter for Salve Regina men’s soccer team. Freshman goalie Adonis Santiago (Montville) played the final 75 minutes of a 4-0 win over UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday and freshman midfielder Lucas DaSilva (Old Lyme) saw his first collegiate action off the bench.

    Also at Salve, junior Hannah Daniewicz (NFA) is a team captain and returning starter for the women’s soccer team.

    • Junior goalie Caitlin Daley (NFA) has made 10 saves in two starts for the University of New Haven women’s soccer team.

    • Western Connecticut State University senior outside hitter Helen Megson (Lyman Memorial) was named the Little East Conference offensive player of the week for volleyball. Megson had 55 kills, 28 digs and seven blocks in three wins last week.

    Tracking the Bears

    • The Coast Guard Academy men’s soccer team is off to a stellar start, winning its first four games without allowing a single goal. The Bears have out-scored opponents, 10-0. Junior Aki Freeman has a team-best five goals. Sophomore Samuel Linkous and junior John Putnam have split the goalie duties, each winning two games.

    CGA puts its undefeated record on the line Tuesday at Eastern Connecticut State University.

    • The women’s soccer team will visit Connecticut College Wednesday afternoon at 4 for the annual Whale Cup game. The Camels (1-1) have captured all 11 meetings in the series, winning 3-0 last fall. The Bears (0-3) have scored just one goal in three games this season and that score came on a penalty kick.

    Camel highlights

    • The Connecticut College volleyball team carries an undefeated record (4-0) into this week’s action. The Camels have a strong west coast connection, as senior Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo) and freshmen Sienna McCormack (Larkspur), Sarah Woodhouse (Santa Barbara), Josie Kelly (Solana Beach) and Mila Chan (San Francisco) all are from California. Sophomore Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.), sophomore Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu), freshman Emma Hoffmann (Salt Lake City) and sophomore Caroline Festersen (Omaha, Neb.) also hail from west of the Mississippi.
