High school roundup: Pape, Vikings top Wildcats in ECC opener for swimming
East Lyme — Ella Pape won the 50-yard freestyle (26.07 seconds), the 100 backstroke (1:08.16) and swam a leg of the winning 200 medley relay for the East Lyme High School swim team Friday in a 96-70 victory over Norwich Free Academy in the Eastern Connecticut Conference.
Peyton Maynard (200 freestyle), Emmy Newton (200 individual medley), Sylvi Otter (diving), Ruby Thoms (100 freestyle) and Molly Newton (500 freestyle) also won events for the Vikings (2-0, 1-0).
Natalie Bezanson won the 100 butterfly in a school record 1:01.42, the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.64 and swam a leg of the winning 400 relay for NFA (0-2, 0-2).
In other meets:
• Waterford’s Julia Gathy (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Hannah Blomberg (100 freestyle, 100 backstroke) each won two individual events and swam on the winning 200 medley relay in the Lancers’ 92-78 win over Ledyard/St. Bernard in the ECC. Thelma Grogan won the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke for Ledyard/St. Bernard (0-2, 0-2), while Anna Kate O’Donnell (200 IM) and Sarah O’Donnell (100 butterfly) also won events.
H.S. football
• AJ Adamick scored four touchdowns to lead Ledyard to a 50-6 opening-night victory over Thames River.
Adamick scored on runs of 41 yards, 1, 79 to give the Colonels a 22-0 lead. Titus Streckfuss recovered a fumble in the end zone to push it to 28-0, Jamel Kearse scored on a 31-yard run and Diego Rosario-Gonzalez added an interception return for a touchdown for a 42-0 advantage.
H.S. girls’ soccer
• Anna Bussman and Brooke Burgess scored goals in Old Lyme’s 2-0 win over Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference. Kate Walsh had an assist and Olivia Kelly two saves to earn the shutout for the Wildcats (3-1, 2-0).
• Sarah Vincent and Lia Day each had a goal and an assist for Ledyard in a 3-0 victory over Fitch in the ECC Division II opener for both teams. Victoria Vidal also had a goal for the Colonels (2-2, 1-0), Maggie Dykes added an assist and Jess Dudley two saves. Jayda Johnson had six saves for Fitch.
• Valentina Corrigan had her first two goals of the season for Wheeler in a 5-0 defeat of New London in an ECC Division IV game. Hannah Viele added a goal and an assist for the Lions (2-4, 2-0), who fired 24 shots in the game, and Zoe Browne and Lily Vaillancourt added a goal apiece. Maya Dessaules and Lily White combined for six saves to earn the shutout. New London is 1-2, 0-1.
H.S. volleyball
• Danica Agsalud finished with 19 assists and 11 digs to lift Waterford to a 25-17, 26-24, 25-18 victory over Bacon Academy, keeping the Lancers unbeaten at 5-0. Ava Majeski added 20 digs, Jennie Macca-Barnes 15 kills and 12 digs and Brielle Kenney nine kills, seven digs and two aces. For Bacon (3-2), Dominique Sanchez had 24 digs and two aces, Maddie Meyer 17 kills and six digs, Bailey Handwerk 22 kills and 17 digs and Jillian Snow 15 assists.
• NFA defeated Montville 25-18, 25-17, 25-16, led by Savannah Guernsey with 13 kills and seven digs, Evelina Klyukin with nine kills and six digs and Stella Hogan with seven kills and 17 digs. Mackenzie Payne led Montville (4-2) with 16 assists and two kills. NFA is 3-2.
• Molly Boardman had 14 digs for Old Lyme in a 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 win over Cromwell in the Shoreline Conference. Maya LeQuire finished with 11 kills and seven aces and Katie Ferman had 11 assists for the Wildcats (2-3, 2-3).
• Abby Parulis had 12 kills and four aces for East Lyme in a 3-0 victory over Lyman Memorial. Finnley Wilson finished with 12 kills and Megan Romanowicz eight assists for East Lyme (3-1). Lyman Memorial is 1-4.
H.S. field hockey
• Anne Marie Hinckley and Brooke Ouellette each had a goal for Westbrook/Old Lyme in a 2-0 win over Valley Regional in the Shoreline Conference. Sybil Neary and Bella Ziegler were credited with assists for Westbrook/Old Lyme (2-2, 2-1).
• Charlotte Cornell, Shay Burnside and Marina Lewandowski scored goals for Stonington in a 3-0 victory over Fitch on Thursday night in the ECC. Cornell scored on a rebound off a penalty corner in the second quarter for the Bears to take a 1-0 lead at halftime and Stonington (3-1, 2-0) scored twice more in the fourth. Emily Obrey added an assist and Hailey Allard made one save in goal. Esme Carlebach made 14 saves for Fitch (2-2, 1-2).
Men’s soccer
• Coast Guard beat Merchant Marine 3-0. Jake Fish, Michael O’Brien and Naveen Jayareem scored goals, Aki Freeman and Jude Sargent had assists and John Putnam made five saves for the Bears (5-0-1).
