H.S. cross country: Montville boys, St. Bernard girls pick up ECC Division III wins
Montville — Host Montville High School picked up a pair of wins in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III boys’ cross country race on Tuesday, beating St. Bernard 23-34 and Tourtellotte 15-50.
Yomilex Ramirez of Montville won the race in 15:21 and teammates Kyler Newer (fourth, 15:43) and Alex Joseph (fifth, 15:43) also made the top five for the Wolves (3-1, 3-1). Rad Tanksley of St. Bernard (3-1, 3-1) was second at 15:27 and Tyler Stringer was third (15:34) for the Saints, who beat Tourtellotte 15-50.
In other meets:
• East Lyme’s Sean McCauley broke his own course record at Rocky Neck as the Vikings beat Stonington 15-50 and Woodstock Academy 17-49 in an ECC Division I meet. McCauley won in 15:58, topping his 16:18 mark. The Vikings (4-0, 1-0) took the top four spots with Sam Leone (16:13), Jilali Benjdid (16:13) and Matt Carrier (16:24) following their teammate. Stonington (0-4) lost to Woodstock 15-47.
• Bacon Academy placed four runners in the top five, beating Waterford 20-41 in an ECC Division II meet. Boden Paul placed second in 18:03 for the Bobcats (1-2, 1-0), followed by teammates Michael Dickey (third, 18:27), Alex Sanchez (fourth, 18:55) and Ian McClain (fifth, 18:58). Waterford’s Titus Olson was the overall winner, crossing the line in 17:54. The Lancers are 1-1, 1-1.
• Kellen Johnson took first (19:35) and Oliver Gatti second (19:36) to power Lyman Memorial past Windham, 15-44, and Putnam, 15-50, in Division III. Mason Martin finished third (19:50) for the Bulldogs (4-0, 4-0).
• Trevor Scarchilli took first place (17:56) for Wheeler, which beat New London, 15-50, and lost to Plainfield, 23-32, in a Division III race. James Noyes placed fifth (19:49) for the Lions (3-1, 3-1). Troy McKelvin Jr. was New London’s top runner, placing 13th in 23:36. The Whalers (0-4, 0-4) lost to the Panthers, 15-50.
• Ledyard and Fitch tied at 29 apiece but the Colonels won on a tiebreaker in a Division I race. Antonio Soldato placed third (17:46) for Ledyard (1-1, 1-1). Julien Silva finished first (16:59) for the Falcons (1-2, 0-2) and Evan Vitagliano was second (17:18).
Girls
• Helena Coury of St. Bernard ran away from the field as the Saints swept an ECC Division III meet, beating Tourtellotte 15-50 and host Montville 21-36. Coury won in 17:24 with teammate Mia Klewin second in 18:32. Fiona Addison (19:53) was fourth for the Saints (4-0, 4-0). Evelyn Granskog was third (19:23) and Melinda Siismets fifth (20:17) for Montville (2-2, 2-2), which beat Tourtellotte 15-50.
• Ledyard’s Kate Littler (22:14), Maggie Littler (22:18), Josephine Whitbroe (22:20), Kaitlyn Sweeney (22:22) and Fionna Woody (23:20) took the top five spots, pacing Ledyard past Fitch 15-44 in Division I. Colbie Synhorst was sixth in 24:06 for the Falcons (0-3, 0-2). The Colonels are 2-0, 2-0.
• East Lyme picked up two wins, beating Stonington 21-31 and Woodstock Academy 21-34 in an ECC Division I meet. Stonington, which lost to Woodstock 25-32, took the top two spots. Molly Musselman won the race in 21:03 and Peyton Vanderstreet was second (21:16) for the Bears (1-3). The Vikings (4-0, 1-0) placed Lauren Fulcher (third, 21:28) and Maya D’Aquila (fifth, 21:58) in the top five.
• Waterford’s Avery Maiese finished first overall (20:03), but the Lancers (1-1, 1-1) lost the Division II race to Bacon Academy 25-33. Lorelei Romasanta placed second (21:55) for the Bobcats (2-1, 1-0) and Avery Anderson was third (22:00).
• Olivia Benjamin finished first in a personal best 22:14 for New London, which lost to Wheeler, 15-50, and Plainfield, 15-50, in Division III. Sophie Zichichi placed second (22:34) and Sophia Gouveia was third (24:19) for the Lions (4-0, 4-0), who also defeated Plainfield, 15-50. The Whalers fell to 0-4, 0-4.
• Hazel DeLucia was the first of six straight Lyman Memorial runners to cross the finish line, posting a winning time of 22:53 in the Division III race and leading the Bulldogs past Windham, 15-50, and Putnam, 15-50. Elisabeth Person was second (22:54) and Nora Johnson third (22:55) for Lyman (4-0, 4-0).
