    Local roundup: Connecticut Sun’s DiJonai Carrington named WNBA’s Most Improved Player

    New York - Connecticut Sun guard-forward DiJonai Carrington has been named the 2024 WNBA Most Improved Player, the league announced Wednesday.

    Carrington received 28 of 67 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters. Los Angeles Sparks forward Dearica Hamby finished in second place with 18 votes.

    The 5-11 Carrington, selected by the Sun with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft, has averaged career highs of 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.56 steals this season, up from 8.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.63 steals in 2023. In addition, she recorded a career-high 25 games with 10 or more points.

    In her fourth WNBA season, Carrington started all 39 games and has helped the Sun post a 28-12 record – the most wins in franchise history.

    Girls’ soccer

    • Megan Armstrong scored two goals and Ledyard defeated Wheeler, 3-0. Emma Piatek also scored for the Colonels (3-4-1) while Ellison Wallace and Vanessa Syphrett each had an assist. Goalkeeper Jess Dudley earned the shutout. Freshman Lily White and sophomore Maya Dessaules had a combined 14 saves for Wheeler (2-6-1).

    • Emma Forde scored two unassisted goals and Fitch edged St. Bernard, 2-1. The Falcons (1-5) won their first game of the season. Alyssa Hernandez scored for the Saints (1-4-2).

    • Marlee Anselmi snapped a 1-1 tie late in the game and Williams defeated Westover, 2-1. Ally Iacobellis also scored for the Blues (5-0-1).

    H.S. volleyball

    • Kayleigh Jones had 12 assists and Waterford defeated Fitch 25-16, 25-21, 25-22. Lucy Walker had eight kills and Brielle Kenney eight digs, six kills and four aces for the Lancers (7-2).

    • Montville defeated New London 25-12, 25-18, 25-13. Mackenzie Payne had 13 assists and 10 aces and Shea Cullen four kills for the Wolves (8-3). Ka’Maya Little had nine points, Raelyn Lopez 20 digs and Adriana Vitorino 11 digs for the Whalers (0-9).

    • Bacon Academy lost to Windham 21-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-19, 11-15. Dominique Sanchez had 38 digs and Maddie Meyer 25 kills for Bacon (6-4).

    • Wheeler defeated Lyman Memorial, 3-1. Jada Overmoyer had five blocks, Allison Needham had 22 digs and Abby Butremovic had 25 digs for the Lions (7-2).

    Boys’ soccer

    • St. Bernard beat Killingly 1-0 in an ECC Division III game on Tuesday. Ben Syphrett scored for the Saints (7-0-2, 4-0).

    Boys’ cross country

    • NFA took the top five spots and beat Ledyard 15-42 in an ECC Division I meet on Tuesday. Anthony Debartolo won the race in 17:20, followed by Jesse Croteau (17:24), Kyle Kornacki (17:40), Jack Dempsey (18:36) and Owen Muench (18:42) for the Wildcats (5-0, 2-0). Antonio Soldato of Ledyard (1-2, 1-2) was sixth at 19:25.
