    H.S. cross country: McCauley and Gilbert finish second at Ocean State

    Warwick, R.I. — East Lyme’s Sean McCauley and Old Lyme’s Chase Gilbert had second-place finishes at the Ocean State Invitational championship races on Saturday.

    McCauley (15:53) led the Vikings to a second-place finish with 108 points. Shamus Larnard of Boston Collehe High won in 15:48 and BC won the team title with 82. Also making the top 50 for the Vikings were Jilali Benjdid (5th, 16:00), Sam Leone (12th, 16:12) and Jack Faitsch (38th, 16:54).

    Other locals to break the top 50 were Tycen LaBelle of Griswold (11th, 16:10) and NFA’s Anthony Debartolo of NFA (45th, 17:05).

    Fitch competed in the varsity race and finished 14th, led by Evan Vitagliano (8th, 16:51) and Julien Silva (12th, 16:52).

    Gilbert ran an 18:13, trailing just Abigail Hennessy of Westford Academy (17:59). Also making the top 50 were Lyman Memorial’s Hazel DeLucia (12th, 19:08) and Elisabeth Person (50th, 20:42). Fitch was 30th in the varsity race.

    In other races:

    • Helena Coury led St. Bernard to a fifth-place finish in the girls’ small school race in the at the Wickham Park Invitational.

    Coury finished sixth in the race in a time of 21:21 to help the Saints score 142. Hale-Ray won with 75. Also finishing in the top 50 for the Saints were Mia Klewin (26th, 23:13), Fiona Addison (38th, 24:11) and Violet Kunka (41st, 24:16).

    Bacon Academy finished seventh and Wheeler was 10th. Making the top 50 were Wheeler’s Sophie Zichichi (16th, 22:43) and Bacon’s Lorelei Romasanta (17th, 22:44) and Avery Anderson (18th, 22:46).

    In the small school boys’ race Wheeler finished 17th and St. Bernard was 18th. Trevor Scarchilli of Wheeler was the top finisher, coming in 30th (18:41). Rad Tanksley was the top finisher for St. Bernard (53rd, 19:33).

    Waterford finished 11th in the medium school girls’ race. Avery Maise was 12th (21:00) and Elle Dibuono was 32nd (22:11) for the Lancers. Bacon finished 17th in the medium school boys’ race and Waterford was 23rd.

    • Williams School ran at the Rocky Hill Day School Invitational on Friday in Rhode Island. Jadiel Thomas of Williams finished third in the 48-runner field in the boys’ race, Calvin LaFrance was 11th and Bill Qi finished 12th. In the girls’ race, Alexa Paserik finished second, Veronica Altamirano was eighth and Leah Reyes finished 10th.
