    Local college roundup: Coast Guard falls in NEWMAC football opener

    New London — The Coast Guard football team lost its New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference opener, falling to Springfield 52-34 on Saturday.

    Springfield (4-0, 1-0) led 52-20 before the Bears (2-2) scored a pair of late touchdowns. East Lyme’s Blane Hart rushed for 112 yards on 10 carries and had a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. His brother, linebacker Cam Hart, made six tackles.

    Joey Armentrout was 16-for-27 passing for 249 yards and two touchdowns for Coast Guard. Matthew LaBouliere had six receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns and Broock Desta caught eight passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.

    Dennis O’Shea had a 3-yard touchdown run for the Bears and threw a touchdown pass to Evan Granahan. Running back Harrison Hensley threw the TD pass to Desta that opened the scoring. Grant Bayesa had 10 tackles to lead the Bears.

    Volleyball

    • Conn College beat Bard 3-0 in a nonleague match, winning 25-12, 25-21, 25-18. Rae Wartelle had 11 kills, Katherine Randall had eight kills and 12 digs and Josie Kelley had 35 assists for the Camels (8-4). Conn lost to Trinity 3-2 in a NESCAC match on Friday. Mila Chan had 23 kills and Wartelle had 14 kills for Conn (0-3 league).

    • Babson beat Coast Guard 3-0 in a NEWMAC match, winning 26-24, 25-21, 25-21. Amelia Matson had 10 kills, Sophia Rosenburg had 30 assists and Kaela France had 18 digs for the Bears (10-6, 0-2). Coast Guard beat Hartford 3-1 on Friday. Matson had 16 kills, Rosenburg had 33 assists and France had 37 digs.

    Women’s soccer

    • Mitchell College senior goalie Gemma Landry had a career-best 27 saves as the Mariners lost to Johnson & Wales 7-0 in a Great North Athletic Conference game. In the process she broke the record for most saves in a single game in the Division III era of the Mitchell program. The Mariners are 0-7, 0-7.

    • No. 7 Middlebury beat Conn College 2-0 in a NESCAC game. Ella Kahrl made seven saves for the Camels (4-4, 1-4).

    • Coast Guard and Babson played to a 0-0 tie in a NEWMAC game on Friday night. Emily Scharnitzky made seven saves for the Bears (1-5-2, 1-0-1).

    Men’s soccer

    • Conn College and No. 2 Middlebury played to a 0-0 tie in a NESCAC game. Peter Silvester made three saves for the Camels (4-1-3, 1-1-3).

    Field hockey

    • Top-ranked Middlebury beat Conn College 10-2 in a NESCAC game. Georgianne Defeo scored three goals for the Panthers (8-0, 5-0). Bridget McGann scored both goals, Rowan Galanis had an assist and Liz Winemaster (nine) and Sadie Abuhaidar combined for 12 saves for the Camels (2-5, 1-4).
