    Local roundup: Ledyard volleyball captures Mohegan Sun Cup

    Groton — Faith Dalton had 13 assists Monday to lead the Ledyard High School volleyball team past Hand 3-1 in the Mohegan Sun Cup tournament held at Fitch.

    Braylyn Johnson finished with four aces, Bella Schweitzer had five aces and six kills and Alana Brewer had five kills for Ledyard (6-10).

    In the second game of the tournament, RHAM topped Fitch 3-1 (25-11, 25-11, 24-26, 25-17). CoCo Vicente had 14 digs, Katie Virtue nine kills and Emma Main 14 assists for Fitch (8-9).

    In other matches:

    • Kierra Neilson had 12 kills, three blocks, two aces, two assists and a dig in Griswold’s 25-15, 25-15, 25-7 victory over Jonathan Law. Summer McLean finished with seven aces, four digs and 16 service points, Abby Matheson seven kills, four digs and an assist and Bella Bruno 18 assists, six digs, two aces, one block and one kill for Griswold (14-2).

    • Savannah Guernsey finished with 36 assists and five digs in Norwich Free Academy’s 3-1 loss to Shelton, with Shelton winning the final two games to break a one-all tie. Game scores were 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 22-25. Stella Hogan added 17 kills and 15 digs and Emily Orcutt had 13 kills and six blocks for NFA (6-11).

    • Sacred Heart swept New London 25-8, 25-5, 25-17. Mercedes Pratts had 19 digs and one kill and Adriana Vitorino 15 digs and three assists for New London (1-15).

    • Maya LeQuire had 11 kills and 17 digs for Old Lyme in a 25-22, 25-16, 25-9 loss to Hale-Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Katie Ferman added nine digs and five assists for Old Lyme (4-13, 4-13).

    • Dominique Sanchez had 27 digs for Bacon Academy in a 3-2 loss to North Haven. Game scores were 19-25, 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 15-10. Also for Bacon (10-7), Lily Koziol contributed eight kills and two aces and Jillian Snow had 22 assists.

    H.S. girls’ soccer

    • Montville and St. Bernard finished in a 1-1 tie in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III matchup. Montville took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Avery Bouchey assisted by Nicole Hudson, but St. Bernard’s Capri Sferrazza scored the tying goal unassisted, making it 1-1 at halftime. Sienna Gressly had seven saves for Montville (9-2-2, 7-0-1), while Madison Scribner also had seven for St. Bernard (3-7-3, 2-3-3).

    • Finn O’Keefe and Madison Hubbard scored goals for Stonington in a 3-0 win over Ledyard on Saturday in ECC Division II. Gianna Terranova was credited with an assist and Payton Stone posted a shutout for Stonington (8-5, 5-1). Ledyard is 5-6-2, 2-4.

    H.S swimming

    • Luciana Juliani was first in the 100 breaststroke for Waterford in the Lancers’ 92-80 loss to Sheehan. Julia Gathy was second in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle and Hannah Blomberg second in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke for Waterford (3-5).

    College recruitment panel

    • St. Bernard athletics will host a college athletic recruitment panel from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the school’s auditorium.

    The event is open to all parents and athletes in the ECC and will include presentations by Brown University men’s basketball assistant coach Tyson Wheeler, a former New London and URI great who was drafted by the NBA’s Toronto Raptors in 1998; Post University women’s basketball coach Courtney Burns (formerly the coach at Mitchell College) and NFA graduate Garvin McAlister, who coaches track and field and boys’ basketball at the Millbrook School in New York.

    Men’s golf

    • Mitchell College’s Shamus McLean, a Fitch graduate, finished the opening round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship on Monday in a tie for second place with a 7-over-par 77. The tournament, which continues Tuesday, is being played at Concord (N.H.) Country Club. Jack Hayes shot an 83 for Mitchell and Liam Kane of Waterford had a 90.

    Women’s volleyball

    • Mitchell College junior Julia Lent was named Libero of the Week by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference for the third time this season.

    Lent, who also received the honor on Sept. 3 and Sept. 9., racked up 55 digs across two matches, helping guide the Mariners to a 1-1 mark in conference play. She averaged 6.88 digs per set, while surpassing 1,000 total career digs, becoming the first player in program history to reach the milestone.

    She began the week by posting a career-high 38 digs in a five-set road victory over Elms College. Lent then recorded 17 digs Saturday against Dean. She leads the league in total digs (338) and digs per set (5.63) for the Mariners (6-11 overall, 2-4 GNAC).

    Goodwin Trail Challenge

    • The Goodwin Trail Challenge, a fundraising event for the East Haddam Land Trust, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 10, with options for a 13.5-mile trail race, a 45-mile mountain bike race and trail hikes of 9 and 13.5 miles through the forested landscapes of East Haddam, Salem, Lyme and East Lyme.

    The timed biking loop includes the 14 miles of the Goodwin Trail itself but will begin and end at Franklin Academy in East Haddam. Runners and hikers will board a bus by 9 a.m. at Darrow Pond in East Lyme for transport to the trail. Please arrive to Darrow Pond between 8 and 8:45 a.m.
