Local roundup: Waterford falls short in M volleyball quarters
Seymour — Danica Agsalud had 32 assists and 16 digs as the eighth-seeded Waterford High School volleyball team fell to No. 1 Seymour in five games in the Class M state tournament Friday.
Game scores were 22-25, 25-13, 25-23, 17-25, 15-12.
Lucy Walker added 10 kills for the Lancers, who finished the season 16-9, Jennie Macca-Barnes 13 digs, 16 kills and three aces and Ava Majeski 19 digs, two aces and two assists.
In other matches:
• No. 6 Wheeler was eliminated from the Class S tournament, falling to No. 3 Lauralton Hall 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Abby Butremovic had 23 digs, Allison Needham had nine digs and four kills and Elsa Kalwara had 14 assists for the Lions (18-7), who lost 25-8, 25-14, 25-19.
H.S. diving
• East Lyme’s Sylvi Otter finished fourth Wednesday in the Class M diving championship at Middletown High School, scoring 335.85 points. Also for East Lyme, Katelyn Haynes was ninth (308.20 points), Jenna Levine 13th (276.55) and Samantha Caldwell 16th (262.55). Guilford’s Jordyn Gould won the meet with 451.80 points.
Middle school championships
• Clark Lane Middle School won the Eastern Connecticut Middle School Conference boys’ cross country championship Monday with 31 points and Ledyard won the girls’ title, edging Clark Lane 44-54.
Stonington’s Hugh McGee won the boys’ individual title in 10 minutes, 40 seconds, followed by Stonington’s Griffin Cimini (10:53.2), Clark Lane’s Tyler Gamble (10:56.1) and James Zimmerman (11:08.6) and Ledyard’s Tripp Burns (11:12.4).
Dustin Miller (seventh), Keanu Chapman (eighth) and Bryson June (ninth) also finished in the top 10 for Clark Lane. Ledyard finished second in the boys’ team standings with 61 points and Stonington was third with 80.
Penelope Poole of Tyl Middle School was the girls’ individual champion in 11:35.6, followed by East Lyme’s Olivia Ibrahim (12:03.5) and Clark Lane’s Maria Pirruccello third (12:03.9). Ledyard was paced Lacey D’Amato (fourth), Clara Shelton (fifth), Jillian Van Vught (ninth), Nala Crouch (12th) and Natalie Yuhas (14th).
East Lyme finished third in the girls’ team standings with 74 points.
Also Monday, Clark Lane topped Groton 2-1 for the ECMSC girls’ soccer championship.
Local golf
• Fran Shields, a former captain of the East Lyme High School golf team (2010-13), had his first hole-in-one Saturday at Old Lyme Country Club. Playing in the annual Chili Open, Shields aced the 123-yard, third hole. His playing partners were his father Fran, brother Ned and Sam Daniels. He helped his foursome place first with a 4-under 31. Tim Campanaro of Clinton recorded his ace on the Elmridge blue course sixth hole on Oct. 26, sinking his shot from approximately 185 yards.
