    Local roundup: Conn women’s cross country sixth in NCAA regional

    Waterford — The 25th-ranked Connecticut College women’s cross country team placed sixth with 116 points and Coast Guard Academy was eighth with 180 at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship on Saturday at Harkness Park.

    Williams, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, won the meet with 59.

    Conn’s Abby Fernald was 13th in a personal-best 6K time of 21 minutes, 50 seconds, followed by teammates Grace McDonough, 21st in 21:59; Kiera Tallas, 24th in 22:09; Abby Williams, 27th in 22:21; and Alsacia Timmerman, 35th in 22:37.

    All five Camels earned all-region honors by virtue of a top-35 finish, with Fernald, Williams and Timmerman earning the distinction for the second straight season, and it was the best score ever for Conn at an NCAA regional.

    Coast Guard senior Paige Phillips led the way for the Bears, placing seventh in 21:27. Claire Semerod was 12th in 21:43, Sidney Triepke 44th in 22:48, freshman Mary Faltys 54th in 23:01 and freshman Hannah Edwards, 66th in 23:15.

    NCAA Championship bids will be announced on Sunday, with local teams or individuals likely to make the cut for the meet to be held Nov. 23rd in Terre Haute, Indiana.

    Men’s cross country

    • Coast Guard was ninth (276 points) and Conn College 11th (311) at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship at Harkness Park. RPI, the No. 7 team in the nation, had a dominant showing to win the meet with 29 points.

    Paul Hobbs, a junior, was 38th for Coast Guard in 25:47 over the 8K course, giving him a first-place finish for the Bears in every meet this season. Ryan Weston was 43rd in 26:00, sophomore Brendan Fant from East Lyme was 57th in a personal-best time of 26:29, Luke Manning was 67th in 26:49 and freshman James Kuduk was 71st in 26:51.

    Coast Guard’s ninth-place finish was its first time cracking the top 10 at the regional meet since 2013.

    For Conn, Matt Scardigno was 11th in a personal-best 24:50 to earn all-region honors for the first time in his career, Ellis Iurilli-Hough 48th in 26:11; Anthony Belford 63rd in 26:43; Josh Barzilai 96th in 27:37; and Alex Santos-Acosta 98th in 27:41.

    Men’s hockey

    • John Harrington finished with a goal and an assist and Conn College closed out its season-opening weekend with its second straight win, defeating Wesleyan 4-1. Andrew Eberling, Devan Newhook and John Russo also scored for the Camels (2-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) and Will McEvoy earned the victory in goal with 38 saves. Quinn Kennedy, Rocco Testa-Basi, Will Winship and Shane Zarcone each were credited with assists for Conn, which got off to a commanding 3-0 lead after one period.

    On Friday, Conn opened the season with a 4-2 win over defending NESCAC champion and No. 4 nationally ranked Trinity. Harrington opened the scoring just 3:16 into the game on assists from Jack Houser and Russo. Logan Cleary, Testa-Basi and Jack Luca also had goals for Conn, with Luca scoring an empty-netter with 59 seconds remaining after Trinity pulled its goalie to try to tie the game. Kellen Beauton made 20 saves to earn the win in goal.

    Women’s hockey

    • Caitlin Pierce scored twice and Galen Kilfeather had two assists for Conn College in a 4-2 loss to Trinity on Friday night at Dayton Arena. Jillian Wexler had nine saves and Devon Galizio six for the Camels (0-1).

    Women’s basketball

    • Addi Hunter finished with 16 points and six rebounds and Conn College forced 31 turnovers in a 68-41 victory over Hartford at Luce Field House. Catie Donadio tacked on 12 points and Mia Xerras had 10 points for Conn (2-0), which jumped out to a 13-2 lead and never trailed. Ava Naszimento had nine points for Hartford, which was playing its season opener.

    Men’s basketball

    • Elias Espinosa and Tom Harrison scored 15 points each and Conn College opened the season with a 73-50 win over Albright in the Greg Grant Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night. Quron Zene Jr. added 12 points in his Conn debut and Cam Schainfeld finished with 10 points and four assists. The Camels shot 12-for-30 from 3-point range, led by a 5-for-6 effort from Harrison, a sophomore, whose 15 points were a career high. Conn was scheduled to face host TCNJ in the championship game of the tournament Saturday.

    Women’s swimming

    • Hope Lane earned wins in the 200 freestyle (1:59.26) and the 500 freestyle (5:26.16) and Conn College opened the season with a split, beating Wellesley 179-109 but falling to Coast Guard 162-113.

    Conn began the meet with a win from the 200 medley relay team of Morganne Young, Campbell Baumgartner, Tessa Gordon and Keira Haas, which finished 1:50.42, edging Coast Guard by just under three-tenths of a second.

    Leah Mayerhauser won the 1-meter diving event with 205.4 points, while the Camels also got wins from Young (50 free), Claire Hoffmann (1,000 freestyle), Baumgartner (200 individual medley) and Gordon (100 butterfly).

    H.S. football

    • Hector Aponte had 155 yards rushing and two touchdowns, 10 tackles and sealed the game with an interception for Montville, which defeated Woodstock Academy 26-23.

    Aidan Johnson was 5-for-11 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown for Montville (1-8), Ky Bosa had an interception to give the Wolves the lead, Andrew McElwee had an 8-yard touchdown catch and Arian Castillo had three receptions for 90 yards.

    “We are most happy for the kids,” Montville coach Tanner Grove said. “They have handled so much adversity and they found a way to win today.”
