Local roundup: Orphanides leads Fitch co-op at State Open
New Haven — Anna Orphanides scored points in four events as the Fitch co-op girls’ swimming team finished 15th in the CIAC State Open at Yale on Sunday.
The team, which includes swimmers from Stonington, New London and Wheeler, scored 133 points. Ridgefield won the title with 587, East Lyme was 29th with 56 and NFA scored three points.
Fitch’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Orphanides, Audrey Schrage, Jai-Lynn Wheeler and Addison Fulling was fifth with a time of 1:39.68. The same four swimmers were eighth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:41.50.
Orphanides, a senior, was eighth in the 50 freestyle (24.49) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (59.52). Wheeler was 19th in the 100 freestyle in 54.85.
East Lyme’s Ella Pape was 11th in the 50 freestyle in a school-record 24.78 and was 22nd in the 100 freestyle (54.92). The Vikings’ 200 freestyle team of Pape, Peyton Maynard, Ruby Thoms and Julia Morcos was 15th (1:42.61) and Sylvi Otter was 14th in diving. Natalie Bezanson of NFA was 22nd in the 200 IM in 2:16.33.
Men’s basketball
• Jaylyn Clardy of Mitchell College was named Most Outstanding Player of the Jim Beaudry Classic at the University of New England as the Mariners beat Maine Maritime 82-75 in the final.
Clardy scored 30 points and had nine rebounds. Eddie Volkerts of New London had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists and was named to the all-tournament team. Brandon Lee had 12 points and eight rebounds and Wilton Causey scored 10 for Mitchell (3-0).
Clardy had 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists and one steal as Mitchell defeated Salve Regina 84-75 Saturday in the first round. Volkerts added 21 points and 15 rebounds and Lee had 11 points and six rebounds.
• Elias Espinosa finished with a career-high 32 points Saturday in Conn College’s 82-65 loss to the College of New Jersey in the championship game of the Greg Grant Tip-Off Tournament. Espinosa was named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts, while Dylan Watson added 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds and Cam Schainfeld had 12 points, two assists and two steals for the Camels (1-1).
College cross country
• The Connecticut College and Coast Guard Academy’s women’s teams each received an at-large bid for the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
Conn, which will make its second straight appearance at the national meet, is coming off a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday at Harkness Park, while Coast Guard was eighth. The top eight teams in the regional all qualified for the championship, the most a single region has produced in the event’s history.
Conn had five runners earn All-Region honors by virtue of a top-35 individual finish. Abby Fernald, Abby Williams, Alsacia Timmerman, Grace McDonough and Kiera Tallas earned the honors. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology is hosting the championships on Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Senior Matt Scardigno of Conn College also qualified. He is one of 70 individuals selected to participate in the men’s championship. Scardigno earned his spot by finishing 11th at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a career-best 8K time of 24:50.9.
Women’s hockey
• Ashley Engle and Lily Stern each scored their first career goals for Conn College in a 4-2 loss Saturday to Trinity. Devon Galizio had 23 saves for Conn (0-2 overall, 0-2 NESCAC), while Gillian Kibbey, Christine Oar and Claire Sammons all had assists. Engle tied the game at 2-2 in the second period on an assist by Kibbey and also won nine draws.
Men’s swimming
• Conn College opened the season with a 179-117 loss to No. 20 Coast Guard Academy on Saturday.
For Conn, Justin Finkel won the 50 freestyle (21.01) and the 100 butterfly (49.57), Cam Bizjak took the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions and Carrick Shea (100 breaststroke) and Jack Mattison-Gulotta (200 butterfly) each won events in their collegiate debuts.
