Local roundup: Volkerts leads Mitchell to victory
New London — Eddie Volkerts scored 20 points and Mitchell College beat Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 96-54 in the men’s basketball Cadet-Mariner Classic on Saturday.
Jaylyn Clardy and Adrian Alicea scored 13 each, Brandon Lee had 11 points and New London’s Volkerts had six rebounds for the Mariners (5-1).
In other games:
• Conn College beat Hartford 90-54 in a nonleague game. RJ Casey scored 19 points, Garrett Clar had 14 points, Alden Doran had 12 points and Elias Espinosa and Jay Royal had 11 points each for the Camels (2-2).
• Eastern Connecticut State beat Coast Guard 57-48 in the Cadet-Mariner Classic. Julian Sanchez scored 12 points and former St. Bernard standout Cedrick Similien had seven points and three rebounds for ECSU (5-0). Luke Farrell scored 19 points and Cameron Brown had 12 rebounds for the Bears (2-2).
On Friday, Farrell came away with a game-saving steal and made the ensuing free throw as the Bears defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 86-83 in the first round of the Cadet-Mariner Classic.
Ben Yagey had 25 points on 9-for-16 shooting and Declan Rooney had 20 points with a team-high four 3-point field goals in the victory, while Farrell added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jordan Frazer finished with 11 points.
Women’s cross country
• Coast Guard junior Claire Semerod earned All-America honors by finishing 40th at the NCAA Division III Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The Bears finished 31st as a team.
Semerod finished the 6K race in 21:47. Paige Phillips was the Bears’ second finisher, coming in 83rd in 22:14. Mary Faltys was 247th (23:32), Hannah Edwards was 284th and Sidney Triepke finished 287th.
No. 24 Connecticut College finished 23rd in the race with Grace McDonough leading the way with a 53rd-place finish in 21:58. Also scoring to the Camels were Kiera Tallas (120, 22:28), Abby Fernald (137, 22:34), Abby Williams (196, 22:58) and Alsacia Timmerman (223, 23:14).
Men’s cross country
• Conn College senior Matt Scardigno finished 54th in 24:54.9 at the NCAA Division III Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.
Women’s basketball
• Mitchell College picked up its first win of the season, beating Mount Holyoke 57-52 in a nonleague game. Freshman Jordyn Streitmatter had 14 points and seven rebounds, N’Tai Teague had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Jade Hypolite had 12 points, six assists, six steals, and three rebounds and Inonda Peterson had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Mariners (1-2).
Former Ledyard standout Helena Robinson led all scorers with 15 points for Mount Holyoke (0-5).
• Conn College rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Salve Regina 59-49 in a nonleague game. Mia Xerras scored 13 points, Addi Hunter had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Hayle Thompson had eight points and seven rebounds and Catie Donadio had seven points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Camels (4-1).
• Kelly Hagerty scored 10 points and had 14 rebounds as Coast Guard beat Endicott 62-59. Dorothy Stotts scored 13 with six rebounds, Olivia Wright came off the bench to score 15 and Julia Mann had eight rebounds for the Bears (5-1).
Men’s hockey
• Conn College rallied to beat Middlebury 2-1 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game. Shane Zarcone scored with 3:27 remaining to give the Camels the win. Will Lawrence had a goal and an assist, Logan Cleary had an assist and Colchester’s Kellen Beauton made 27 saves for Conn (3-1, 3-1). Jack Houser scored the lone goal for Conn in a 5-1 loss to Williams on Friday.
Women’s hockey
• Conn College lost to No. 4 Amherst 3-1 in a NESCAC game. Kiley Smith scored in the third period as the Camels (0-4, 0-4) avoided the shutout. Claire Sammons scored on a power play in Conn’s 3-1 loss Friday to Amherst. Kate Hagness and Smith were credited with assists in the game, which was tied 1-1 headed to the third period. Devon Galizio had 28 saves for Conn.
H.S. football
• Valley Regional/Old Lyme won its third straight game, beating Coventry/Windham Tech/Bolton 31-8 on Thursday night. Tommy Troy scored four touchdowns for Valley (6-3). He caught a screen pass from Giovanni Winters and went 75 yards for a touchdown, scored on runs of 1, 8 and 52 yards and intercepted a pass. Valley closes out its regular season on Tuesday at Haddam-Killingworth. Coventry is 1-9.
