Local roundup: Bobcats have three players named all-state in girls’ soccer
The Bacon Academy girls’ soccer team had three players named recently to the Connecticut Girls’ Soccer Coaches’ Association Class M all-state team.
Elizabeth Glover, Mia Hageman and Audrey Palmer received honors for the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I champion Bobcats (13-3-3).
Also receiving all-state distinction were East Lyme’s Maya Pitruzzello and Waterford’s Adyson Wiseman in Class L, Stonington’s Maya Terwilliger in Class M and Wheeler’s Zoe Brown and Lyman Memorial’s Phoebe Carpenter and Emily McKelvey in Class S.
Shoreline Conference honors
• Old Lyme High School’s Olivia Kelly was named the Shoreline Conference Goalkeeper of the Year for girls’ soccer and Mya Johnson was named Assistant Coach of the Year. Joining Kelley on the all-league first team was Kate Walsh. Charlotte Spiegel was honored on the second team and Kanon Oharu was named honorable mention.
In boys’ soccer, Old Lyme’s Brenden Landry was a first team selection and Colman Curtiss-Reardon was an honorable mention pick.
Westbrook/Old Lyme had four first team selections in field hockey with Alyssa Leandri, Brooke Ouellette, Eimy Novillo and Grace Vincent. Westbrook/Old Lyme coach Janet Dickey was honored as the Shoreline Coach of the Year, Ouellette was Co-Player of the Year and Vincent was Co-Goalkeeper of the Year. Anne-Marie Hinckley and Bella Ziegler were named to the second team and Salina Erekson to the honorable mention team.
Shoreline champion Chase Gilbert earned first team honors in girls’ cross country, as did freshman Maia Guisti.
H.S. football
• Montville’s Hector Aponte rushed for more than 200 yards and four touchdowns Tuesday night in the Wolves’ season-ending loss to Windham, 52-32. Aidan Johnson also connected with Dante Crisman for a touchdown pass for Montville (1-9).
Men’s hockey
• Shane Zarcone scored with 1:23 left in overtime to give Conn College a 5-4 win over Manhattanville on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena. Conn (4-1) took a 4-3 lead in the third period on a goal by Jon Barker, assisted by Jack Luca and Will Lawrence, but Manhattanville tied things a minute and a half later on a goal by Nicholas Rogers, eventually leading to the overtime session. Primo Baldassarre got the win in his collegiate debut for Conn, finishing with 25 saves in goal, while John Russo paced the Camels with a goal and an assist and Reid Shafer and Cole Watson added goals.
Women’s basketball
• Mia Xerras gave Conn College the lead for good with a 3-pointer in overtime and the Camels defeated Eastern Connecticut State 68-65 Tuesday at Luce Field House. Catie Donadio paced three Camels in double figures with 14 points, Addi Hunter added 12 points and six rebounds and Xerras scored five of her 10 points in overtime. Xerras’s 3 gave Conn a 62-59 lead with 1:48 to go in OT, Hunter followed with a jump shot to extend the lead to five with less than a minute to play and Xerras and Avery Burns converted free throws in the final 30 seconds to clinch the victory. Bacon Academy grad Marissa Nudd scored 13 points for Eastern Connecticut. Conn is 5-1.
Men’s basketball
• Eastern Connecticut State’s Jalen Hamblin came up with a blocked shot in the closing seconds to protect a one-point lead and the Warriors defeated Conn College 61-60. Cam Schainfeld scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in the second half to lead Conn (2-3), while Elias Espinosa tacked on 14 points and two assists and Dylan Watson had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
Calendar
• The Southern New London County Mutiny Independent Football Club has expanded operations to offer spring tackle football to area youth players. The Mutiny will be competing in the New England Youth Tackle Football League, Inc. at the 14U level for Spring 2025 competition. The NEYT league is in its eighth season of operation with teams throughout MA, RI, and CT, has provided competition at the 9U, 11U, 13U, 14U, and 15U levels for several years and has been recognized as the premier youth spring league in New England.
The Mutiny will play a six-game regular season schedule starting with a league-wide jamboree on April 6, 2025. The league doesn’t apply boundary limits so players are welcome to join from all over with the primary recruiting area to be SE Connecticut. A 15U program is currently being explored due to significant interest in the 14U level. Lower age groups will also be available due to a partnership with another program. An official announcement will be made soon.
