The musical ‘Escape to Margaritaville’ hits Ivoryton
The late Jimmy Buffett created a whole new genre of music, powered by a laidback, cheery, all’s-well-with-the-world vibe.
If you hear his songs, you, in Pavlovian fashion, automatically want the sun on your face and a tropical drink in your hand.
Buffett’s music has extended its reach beyond the radio waves and concert halls into a Broadway theater, thanks to the stage musical “Jimmy Buffett’s Escape to Margaritaville.” It’s got Buffett’s greatest hits, from “Cheeseburger in Paradise” to “Margaritaville” to “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” in this story of a bartender/singer working in a Caribbean tourist spot and a career-focused scientist who’s visiting the island for her friend’s bachelorette party. Do sparks fly? What do you think? Especially since they’re played by a couple who are wed to each other in real life: Margaret Dudasik and Sam Sherwood.
The show’s book comes from a couple of guys who really know comedy: Greg Garcia, who is the creator/executive producer of such sitcoms as “Yes, Dear” and “My Name Is Earl,” and Mike O’Malley, who starred on “Yes, Dear” and created “Survivor’s Remorse” and was the showrunner for “Heels.”
