Groton Regional Theatre stage the popular comedy “The Nerd” this weekend and next.

And maybe we should include the word “finally,” since GRT tried twice before to produce the show, only to have the pandemic get in the way.

The show, written by Larry Shue, finds a young architect named Rick being visited by a fellow ex-GI. This guest, named Willum, saved Rick’s life after Rick was seriously injured in Vietnam, although Rick never saw or met Willum at the time. Well, it turns out Willlum is a nerd, with all the awkward behavior that implies. The fact that Willum shows up during Rick’s birthday party only adds to the cringe — and the comedy.

Theresa Broach directs GRT’s “The Nerd,” which stars Ryan Sanborn as Willum and Patrick Cote as Rick. The cast also includes Hayden Burger, Chelsea Norton, Michael Whitehouse, Suzanne Scorza and Rowan Whitehouse.

Some fun facts about the production: All the actors are performing with GRT for the first time. It’s the first time that Michael Whitehouse, who is an award-winning public speaker, has acted; Rowan Whitehouse, who is also in the cast, is his son. There is more food in this production than any other GRT has produced.

“The Nerd,” Thrive 55+ Active Living Center, 102 Newtown Road, Groton; 7:30 p.m. Fri., Sat. and Sept. 21, and 2 p.m. Sun. and Sept. 22; tickets $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students; grotontheatre.org.
