Driver's license services down again at Rhode Island DMV

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Technicians are working to get driver's license services back up at the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles after a technical problem brought the system down for the second time in the span of a few weeks.

An agency spokesman said Wednesday that a network connection to a national data center was severed, preventing the state from accessing verification systems needed to issue licenses.

The agency says the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators and Verizon are working to fix the problem, but it is not clear when the system will be running again.

A similar issue caused an outage at the end of April. The agency says that outage caused problems around the country, but the current one is limited to Rhode Island.
