    Rhode Island reports 800 new virus cases over 3 days

    PROVIDENCE (AP) — There were 800 new confirmed coronavirus cases in Rhode Island and seven additional virus-related death over the past three days, the state Department of Health said Monday.

    In addition to the 800 cases confirmed Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the state added 106 cases to previous days' totals, and has now had more than 31,000 known cases since the pandemic began.

    The seven deaths brought the total number of fatalities to 1,184.

    The department does not update on weekends.

    The 7-day rolling average of the positivity rate in Rhode Island has risen over the past two weeks from about 1.8% on Oct. 11 to more than 3.1% on Sunday, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

    The 7-day rolling average of daily new cases over the past two weeks is also rising, going from more than 197 on Oct. 11 to more than 265 on Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins.

    The number of patients in the state's hospitals with the disease was 163 as of Saturday, the latest day for which the information was available, with 14 of those people in intensive care.
