    Teen dies after being shot multiple times in New Haven

    A 19-year-old man is dead following a shooting in New Haven late Sunday.

    Police officers at 8:21 p.m. received a ShotSpotter notification followed by a report of a gunshot victim in the area of Downes Street, between Columbus Avenue and Congress Avenue, where they found a 19-year-old who had been shot multiple times, according to the New Haven Police Department.

    Medics and members of the New Haven Fire Department tended to the victim while police officers established a crime scene, police said. The teen, identified as Jovani Ortiz of New Haven, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition, according to police.

    Police said they were notified on Monday that Ortiz had died at the hospital. He would have turned 20 next Sunday.

    Shortly after the shooting, detectives from the police department’s Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene to gather evidence, interview witnesses and search for surveillance footage. According to police, detectives located ballistic evidence at the scene.

    Police said that they received the report that a vehicle fled the scene following the sound of gunshots.
