Police make arrest in shooting of man found dead in apartment

Police have charged a man in connection with a fatal shooting in Hartford in May.

Rene Almadovar, 47, of Hartford was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with murder, first-degree threatening and criminal possession of a firearm, according to Lt. Aaron Boisvert of the Hartford Police Department.

The charges stem from the shooting of 57-year-old Andrew Gunn, who was found dead on May 24 in an apartment at the same Wethersfield Avenue complex where Almadovar resides, according to Boisvert. Officers responded to the apartment complex shortly before 10 a.m. on a report of a dead man in one of the units before discovering Gunn, who was suffering from “trauma-related injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, Boisvert said.

Police at the time called it a suspicious death. Boisvert said an autopsy later showed that Gunn had suffered a gunshot wound.

According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Gunn died of a gunshot wound to his head and an injury to his neck. His death was ruled a homicide.

Boisvert said the Hartford Police Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions were able to identify Almadovar as a suspect during the investigation. They obtained a warrant for his arrest before members of the Patrol Division located him on Saturday and took him into custody.

Almadovar was held on a $3 million bond and was expected to be arraigned on Monday in Hartford Superior Court.
