Monkey found in Old Saybrook shed gets new home out of state, DEEP officials say

A monkey found in a shed in Old Saybrook earlier this month no longer is in Connecticut, according to officials.

The monkey, a marmoset, was rehomed out of state, a state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesperson confirmed Friday. Further information about where the monkey now is residing was not immediately available.

DEEP took custody of the primate on July 1 after an Old Saybrook homeowner found it in his shed. The monkey's owner came forward and helped capture the monkey, DEEP Director of Communications Will Healey said.

The monkey then was taken to Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, which quarantined the animal while plans were being established for a permanent home at an approved facility, zoo spokesperson Rowena White said. The monkey was held in a quarantined environment and medically evaluated.

Possessing the monkey is prohibited under state law, Healey noted. In addition to the legal issues, White said marmoset monkeys and other exotic or non-domestic animals are not appropriate pets.

"Marmosets have complex social and environmental needs, requiring specialized diets, large enclosures, and extensive interaction," she explained. "They can also exhibit aggressive behavior and carry disease.

"For their well-being and family safety, it is legal and best to appreciate exotic animals in their natural habitats or at accredited sanctuaries and zoos," she continued.
