Bison calf born during mother's 'illegal' trip to Guilford gets a name
NORTH BRANFORD — The baby bison born while his mother and other family members were on the lam after escaping from a local ranch now has a name.
The calf was dubbed Auggie Moonbeam Friday, a name chosen from some 50 submissions by Amanda Maresca, whose family owns the 3B Ranch in North Branford, and her children. They picked the name from a hat filled with suggestions on a video posted to social media.
Community members submitted names like "Ferdinand," "Moonshine," and "Lunar," through Instagram and Facebook, Maresca said Friday.
"We were kind of surprised to see that a lot of people joined in," she said.
The calf has been something of a sensation after his parents and a cousin escaped from the 80-acre farm in North Branford on Sunday and roamed to neighboring Guilford. During the trip, which ended Tuesday when the four bison returned to the farm on their own, one of the bison gave birth. Maresca has described the calf as healthy and fun-loving.
"He is the only baby that we have right now on the farm," she said. "He's super cute and playful and kind of running and jumping around, so we're going to try to follow up with him and take more content so everyone can see."
Maresca said she hopes to continue engaging the local community, potentially for a project to design bison T-shirts to help raise money for Connecticut residents hit by a recent wave of flooding.
"We're definitely thinking about posting more content about our farm because it is a little unique. There's really not a lot of farms around here with the bison that we have," she said.
