Navy to commission first sub for mixed-gender crews on Saturday

The U.S. Navy will commission the USS New Jersey (SSN-796), the first submarine fully integrated for mixed gender crews, on Saturday in Middletown, N.J.

The Virginia-class submarine was built by Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News Shipbuilding, in partnership with Electric Boat. It can carry a crew of 120 enlisted sailors and 15 officers and has modifications for gender integration such as berthing compartments to enhance privacy, steps for reaching triple-high bunk beds and adjusting overhead valves to make them easier to reach.

“Our nation is at its best when all Americans, regardless of race, gender, or creed, can fully contribute their talents to the greater good. For over a decade, women have proven to be outstanding submariners and our submarines themselves will now be better equipped to support those already serving, and all who will serve in the future,” said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
