Veterans Day is Nov. 11, and several Connecticut businesses are offering specials on items in honor of veterans and active military personnel.

The federal holiday was founded to honor the end of World War I when Germany signed an armistice agreement with the Allies on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938, according to the U.S. Census. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name of the holiday to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.

Target

Statewide

Through Nov. 11, all military personnel, veterans and their families can score a two-time use Target storewide 10% discount with a Target Circle offer and $50 in Target Circle rewards, according to Target's website. Mohegan Sun Arena

Mohegan Sun offers several year-round military discounts to anyone with a non-expired military ID, including active duty, veterans and military dependents. The arena will also host its annual Vets Rock event on Saturday, Nov. 16 starting at 11 a.m., featuring a job fair, veteran service organizations, veteran-owned businesses and other resources. There will also be live music and a dog adoption event.

Chili's

Statewide

Veterans and active military can grab a free meal off of Chili's special Veterans Day menu when they dine in the restaurant, on Nov. 11, according to its website.

All across the state

Free haircuts are available for all veterans and active duty military on Veterans Day, according to Sport Clips Haircuts' website.

Outback Steakhouse

Wilton, Shelton, Orange, Newington, Southington and North Haven

Through Nov. 11, Outback Steakhouse will give veterans and those who serve a free Bloomin' Onion and a free drink of any Coke product or a 16-ounce domestic draft along with the purchase of an adult entree, according to its website.

Outback Steakhouse has locations in Wilton, Southington, Shelton, Orange, Newington and North Haven.

Hooters

Wethersfield

All active-duty and retired military are entitled to one free entree from a special Veterans Day menu on Nov. 11, according to its website.

Veterans and active military can get free Red, White & Blueberry Pancakes on Veterans Day, according to its website.

Statewide

Walgreens is offering an in-store 20% discount to all veterans and active duty military through Nov. 11, according to its website.

CT Transit

CT Transit will offer free bus rides to veterans, active-duty military personnel, retirees and disabled veterans all-day on Veterans Day. Individuals must present a valid military ID in order to ride for free in Hartford, New Haven, Stamford and surrounding providers (North East Transportation (NETCO, New Britain Transportation (NBT), DATTCO, Collins Bus Service, and Peter Pan Bus Lines).
