GOP senator arrested for video voyeurism, extortion

PROVIDENCE (AP) — A Rhode Island state senator has been arrested by state police on charges of video voyeurism and extortion.

Lt. Col. Joseph Philbin says Republican Sen. Nicholas Kettle was arrested Friday afternoon and was being taken to state police headquarters to be processed. He said he was not sure when Kettle would appear in court.

Messages left for Kettle's lawyer were not immediately returned.

Philbin says the two extortion counts came through a grand jury indictment. The one count of video voyeurism was brought by state police.

He would not comment further on the charges.

Kettle is 27 years old and serves as the Senate minority whip in the tiny Republican caucus. He represents parts of Coventry, Foster, Scituate and West Greenwich.
