Man who crashed car into hospital ER has died, hospital says

Steven Ellam, who rammed his car into the ER at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown last week and set himself on fire, has died, a Bridgeport Hospital spokesman said.

The 27-year-old died overnight in the hospital’s burn unit, John Cappiello said Friday morning.

Ellam crashed his car through the sliding glass doors of the emergency room at 9:58 a.m. Feb. 22. He got out of the car, doused himself in a flammable liquid and set himself on fire, Mayor Daniel Drew said. The car, which had several gasoline cans inside, burned briefly as smoke billowed out of the hospital’s front door.

A security guard who was evacuating people from the emergency room was treated for smoke inhalation, a hospital official said, but no one else was injured.

The city’s police chief said Friday that investigators believe that while Ellam did intend to cause harm to others, he worked alone.

“At this time, there are no indications of any further threats of violence to the hospital or the Middletown community, Chief William McKenna said.

He said a joint investigation of the crash, which involves Middletown police, the FBI and several other federal, state and local agencies, continues.
