Former Danbury school board chairwoman pleads guilty in sex assault

Danbury (AP) — The former chairwoman of a Connecticut school board has pleaded guilty to her role in the sexual exploitation of a child.

The News Times reports that Sara Sobel pleaded guilty under the Alford doctrine Wednesday to risk of injury to a minor and promoting a minor in an obscene performance. The plea means she disagrees with the evidence, but acknowledges there is enough to convict.

Prosecutors say Sobel, former Redding Board of Education chairwoman, left the child alone with Stephen Overby and took pornographic photos of the child that she gave to him. The victim was a girl under 13.

Sobel faces 30 years in prison suspended after 10 years at sentencing Oct. 24.

Overby pleaded guilty in February and was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
