Connecticut reports first child flu death of season

HARTFORD (AP) — Connecticut public health officials have reported the state's first pediatric flu death of the season.

The Department of Public Health on Friday did not release the child's age, gender or say where the child lived.

Commissioner Raul Pino said in a statement "Our hearts go out to the family of this child."

The death brings the number of flu-related deaths in the state this season to 30. Nearly 1,700 people have required hospitalization.

Pino stressed the importance of getting vaccinated.

Pino says there have now been 12 flu-associated pediatric deaths in the state from the 2005-2006 season through the 2017-18 season. Most of those children had not been vaccinated.
