Softball league president denies failing to pay caterer

STAMFORD (AP) — The president of a Connecticut youth softball organization has pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to pay a caterer thousands of dollars he allegedly owed for a league banquet.

The Stamford Advocate reports that 62-year-old Charles Pia Sr., president of the city's Babe Ruth Girls Softball League, entered his plea at a court hearing Thursday. The company that catered the event says it's owed $4,000.

Pia is also charged with embezzling $1,500 from the league. His attorney, Stephen Seeger, says he intends to plead not guilty to that charge too.

Seeger called the failure to pay the caterer a "misunderstanding," because it supplied more food than the league asked for and Pia only wanted to pay for what he ordered.

Pia blamed the embezzlement charge on disgruntled parents.
