Storrs — UConn completed its regular season by splitting an American Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader with No. 9 East Carolina on Friday, losing the opener 6-3 at J.O. Christian Field before winning the second game 4-2.

The No. 22 Huskies (32-18-1, 14-10) beat the Pirates the 2-1 in the three-game series and will be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in next week's AAC tournament at Clearwater, Fla.

In the second game, Chase Gardner allowed only three hits, one run and struck out seven over five innings to earn his fourth win of the season and ace Tim Cate, who has been sidelined with a forearm injury since March 29, returned to pitch a pair of scoreless innings.

P.J. Poulin pitched the final two innings to earn his 15th save, a single-season program mark. The previous record of 14 was set a year ago by John Russell, who starred at Avery Point before moving to the main campus.

UConn took control with three runs on the third on consecutive RBI singles by Zac Susi, Isaac Feldstein and Wheeler's Troy Stefanski. Susi has now reached base in 40 consecutive games.

Mike Woodworth added a solo homer in the fifth, his third home run of the season, for the Huskies.

In the opener, Conor Moriarty had three hits for UConn, including a double and RBI.
