New York — UConn’s Katie Lou Samuelson had no idea where she would go in Wednesday night’s WNBA Draft. Not after a senior season in which her back gave her trouble. Not in a draft where there was no consensus number one pick.

Samuelson was shocked, then, when she was drafted fourth overall by the Chicago Sky.

“Coming into this draft, there had been so many things (that happened) throughout the season that there was no way for me knowing where I thought I was going to go,” Samuelson said. “Being picked fourth, it was amazing.”

UConn forward Napheesa Collier was taken sixth overall by the Minnesota Lynx.

Samuelson, 6-foot-3, was a three-time All-American first team pick. She averaged 18.5 points and 6.3 rebounds her senior year and was a career 41.5 percent 3-point shooter. She’ll be reunited with former Husky teammate Gabby Williams, last year’s fourth overall pick.

“It’s pure happiness,” Samuelson said about being drafted. “I don’t even know how to describe it. My hands were shaking holding that (Chicago) jersey up there (on the dais). It’s so amazing just to be there.”

Collier, a 6-foot-2 forward, was a three-time All-American first team pick. She averaged 20.8 points and 10.8 rebounds her senior year.

Collier goes from the most successful women’s basketball program in college history to one of the most successful franchises in WNBA history. The Lynx won four world championships between 2011 and 2017, tying the now defunct Houston Comets for the most in league history.

Minnesota is in transition, however. Lindsay Whalen retired in the offseason, and core players such as Seimone Augustus and Rebekkah Brunson are 34 and 37, respectively. 2014 WNBA MVP Maya Moore is also taking this season off.

“It seems like it’s going to be a pretty smooth transition,” Collier said. “(Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve) kind of expects the same kind of things that were expected of me at UConn. She’s a great coach, and I can’t wait to get down there.”
