Richie Springs commits to play for UConn men

UConn crossed the last item off its recruiting shopping list for the upcoming season by securing a commitment from 6-foot-9 power forward Richie Springs.

Springs visited UConn Sunday and announced his decision on his Twitter account on Tuesday.

He elected to reclassify in order to be ready to play at UConn this fall.

He graduated from MacDuffie School in Granby, Mass., where he was a teammate of guard James Bouknight who also will begin his first season with the Huskies. Springs thinks he can help out right away.

"I think I can stretch the floor and become a really good combo forward,'' said Springs. "I'll also bring a ton of energy whether I'm in the game or on the bench. I also want to become the best rebounder in the conference."

The tradition at UConn, and the coming return to the Big East Conference, appealed to Springs.

"The history behind UConn basketball, the culture and my relationship with the coaching staff definitely played a role in my decision,'' said Springs. "I also want to be a part of UConn's rebuilding process as they go back into the Big East and help UConn go back to the way it was."

Other members of the incoming recruiting class include guard Jalen Gaffney and forward Akok Akok, who will be eligible to play after only practicing with the team last semester.

The addition of Springs adds depth to a thin frontcourt and fills the last available scholarship.

In other news, UConn will hold First Night for the men's and women's basketball teams on Friday, Oct. 18.
