UConn women add Poffenbarger to roster for second semester

The UConn women's basketball program announced Friday morning that Saylor Poffenbarger has enrolled in classes and will join the team for the second semester.

Poffenbarger, a 6-foot-2 guard from Middletown, Maryland, was a Class of 2021 signee, but earned enough credits to graduate from Middletown High School in December.

"I know Saylor's really excited. This is an unprecedented event for us for a lot of reasons, but this is an unprecedented year," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said in a release. "Opportunities have presented themselves that weren't available for the past. I'm excited for Saylor and her family that they wanted to take advantage of this opportunity and I can't wait to coach her in practice and have her as part of the team."

UConn officials said Poffenbarger was due to arrive on campus over the weekend, will go into a mandated 10-day medical quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then be eligible to take part in all team activities.

Poffenbarger was ranked the No. 30 recruit in her class by ESPN. She was an all-state selection in 2018 and 2019, and the Central Maryland Conference Player of the Year both seasons. Middletown has not competed this winter due to the pandemic. She averaged 21.2 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists per-game as a junior in 2018-19.

Poffenbarger also played for the gold medal-winning USA national team in the 2019 FIBA Americas U15 Championship, averaging 7.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

    • UConn also announced its Tuesday, Jan. 26, against Providence has been postponed. The Friars, who announced a pause in team activities on Tuesday, announced Friday they had to extend that pause due to additional COVID-related issues. No makeup date has been announced.

The fourth-ranked Huskies (7-0, 6-0 Big East) will return to action on Tuesday with a conference game against Butler at 6:30 p.m. at Gampel Paviliion, then hit the road for a non-conference game at Tennessee on Thursday at 7 p.m.
