American giants Yarn on tour behind new album

The slow rise of Americana music over the last decade has had an interesting impact. For example, there are now only seven non-Americana bands left in the world! The rest have scampered onto the literal band wagon.

This is probably in no small part due to the group Yarn — one of the best roots bands ever. And though they're originally from Brooklyn (!), they've been in North Carolina for a while now. The move seems to have provided a bit of resolution after years of lineup changes and critical approval that never quite paid off in the success they deserve. This seems resonant on their new album, "This is the Year," on which singer/songwriter Blake Christina has delivered a collection of wise, mature and wonderfully crafted songs.

I hope "This is the Year" is in fact the album that breaks Yarn in a big way. And while it's a bit of a mellow album, the band rocks in big fashion onstage — as they'll do Saturday at New London's Captain Scott's Lobster Dock. It's an almost unbelievable opportunity to see a world-class band in a charming and intimate setting.

Yarn, 7 p.m. Saturday, Captain Scott's Lobster Dock, 80 Hamilton St., New London; free; (860) 439-1741.
