DJ Khaled takes to the Mohegan Sun Arena stage

For a long time, all I knew of DJ Khaled came from watered-down radio edits of his compositions playing on a rented PA system reverberating in the echo of the school gym during awkward middle school dances. More recently, I’ve encountered him in taxis and Ubers, when the ride is just short enough not to bother to ask the driver to change the radio station. I always know a DJ Khaled song when I hear one because he will say his own name throughout the song, punctuated by air horns and sirens, I kid you not, dozens of times.

DJ Khaled is a music producer, which means he oversees the recording process and gives advice to musicians. He’s been nominated for two Grammy Awards and has released 10 studio albums in which he raps as well as produces. The newest of his albums, “Grateful,” credits his then-4-month-old son as executive producer. The album cover is a picture of his son, Ashad, who by that time was 7 months old, sitting in a hot tub with what looks like a necklace on. The album features such recognizable talent as Future, Rick Ross, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, Chance the Rapper, Rihanna, Nas, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Jay Z and, somehow, many more.

There is no denying that DJ Khaled is in the highest class of industry-approved musicians. So DJ Khaled’s upcoming performance Thursday at Mohegan Sun will reflect that status, as he can draw a crowd on any point on the map and entertain.

DJ Khaled, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $35-$55; 1-800-745-3000.
