Austin guitarist/songwriter Doyle Bramhall II plays Knick on Saturday

Most of the music fans in the world know Doyle Bramhall II as the guitarist whose riverine runs have helped fuel Eric Clapton's road band for many years.

Those of us from Texas, though, have been aware of DBII since his very early days as a precociously talented teen blues/rock guitarist from Austin — often playing with or compared to fellow citizen Charlie Sexton. Bramhall's dad was renowned as one of the state's finest drummers and a significant songwriter for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.

He's much in-demand as a composer, producer and guitarist and has collaborated with, among others, T-Bone Burnett, Elton John, Gary Clark, Jr., Gregg Allman, Dr. John, Robert Randolph, Allen Toussaint, Billy Preston, Erykah Badu and Questlove.

Me? I've always preferred DBII's sporadically released but very fine and underrated solo work, with tunes like "Day Come Down" from "Jellycream" and "Mama Can't Help You" from last year's "Rich Man." Great player. Great songwriter. Great singer.

Bramhall II plays Saturday in Westerly at the Knickerbocker Music Center. He's one of Texas' finest talents — and that's saying a lot. Althea Grace appears in support.

    Doyle Bramhall II, 7:00 p.m. Saturday, the Knick, 35 Railroad Ave., Westerly, $30 advance, $35 door; (401) 315-5070, knickmusic.com.
