U.S. Coast Guard Band welcomes guest conductor Winther for Sunday performance

    Rodney Winther (submitted)

From 1975 to 2004, Commander Lewis J. Buckley fluidly led the esteemed United States Coast Guard Band. In acknowledgement of his service, the organization established the Lewis J. Buckley Guest Artist Series, an annual matinee concert featuring the band and a special visiting conductor.

On Sunday on the Coast Guard Academy's campus, guest artist Rodney Winther will take the reins for a concert called "Music from Around the World." Winther was the long-time director or wind studies and music professor at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory and has appeared as clinician/conductor with over a dozen orchestras and ensembles across the globe.

The program includes Percy Fletcher's "Vanity Fair" and James Curnow's "Symphonic Variants," featuring euphonium soloist Chief Musician Bonnie Denton. Also scheduled are Chen Yu-Chou's "Dance Festival," Karel Husa's "Divertimento for Brass and Percussion" and H. Owen Reed's "La Fiesta Mexicana." Pieces by John Philip Sousa and Henry Fillmore conclude the performance.

United States Coast Guard Band, 2 p.m. Sunday, Leamy Hall, United States Coast Guard Academy, 15 Mohegan Ave., New London; free; (860) 701-6826.
