Montville stresses opposition to sex-offender site

Montville - The Town Council unanimously passed a resolution Monday night that solidifies its opposition to the potential siting of a sexual offender treatment facility on the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center property.

The state Department of Correction and the court support services division of the Judicial Branch have awarded a bid to The Connection Inc., a nonprofit human services organization, to oversee a 24-bed facility for pre-release and probationary sexual offenders.

The council's resolution, proposed by the entire council and the mayor, said that such a facility would affect the quality of life in town as it is located in the town's economic corridor and near several businesses and a child care facility.

Negotiations have yet to begin on a contract with The Connection. The DOC is awaiting clarification on whether an amendment to a bill approved in the final hours of the state legislative session last week that requires at least five sites to be considered for such facilities and specifies certain criteria that must be considered before a location is chosen is retroactive.
