    CAROLYN SMITH PERFORMS RESEARCH

    Norwich - Carolyn Smith, daughter of Timothy and Teresa Smith of Norwich, was one of 15 Saint Michael's College students who did extensive research this past semester on the Underground Teen Center in Winooski, Vt.'s, Obrien Community Center.

    Smith and classmates provided a range of commentary and insights to Winooski's City Council.

    NEW ENGLAND INSTITUTE PRESENTS BEST OF TECH AWARDS

    Bozrah - James A. Gagnon and Lisa M. Sawicki, both of Bozrah, were the recipients of the Best of Tech Award presented at New England Institute of Technology's 13th annual Best of Tech Ceremony held April 23.

    CLINTON DOCTOR IS HONORED

    Clinton - Dr. Mindy Hoffer of Clinton graduated from New York Medical College in 1985 and received a 25-year silver diploma on May 22 at the annual alumni banquet held in New York City at Carnegie Hall.

    STUDENT FROM MYSTIC EARNS RECOGNITION

    Mystic - Alexander Lavruk of Mystic was recognized for participation in campus activities recently at a ceremony in the Griswold Theatre.

    Lavruk, a sophomore majoring in international business, received the Outstanding Sophomore Award from American International College.

    OAKDALE STUDENT WINS CITIZENSHIP AWARD

    Oakdale - Megan McNatt of Oakdale received the Parents Association Student Citizenship Award at Western New England College.

    McNatt is a senior graduating with a degree in political science.

    The Parent Association Student Citizenship Award is given to a student who demonstrated significant contributions to student life throughout their tenure at the College.

    BIO DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES HONORS

    A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students were recognized on April 16 to recognize and reward distinguished achievements in biology.

    Awards were given to Nicholas Adams, Jewett City; Michelle Mencer, Mystic; and Anissa Turner, New London.

    CONN COLLEGE HANDS OUT AWARDS

    The following local residents received student achievement awards at the annual Honors and Awards ceremony at Connecticut College on April 28:

    FILM STUDENT FROM NL EARNS 4.0 GPA

    John Francisconi of New London, a film production major at Emerson College in Boston, earned a 4.0 grade point average for the Spring 2010 semester.

    During the Fall 2009 semester, John attended Suffolk University in the Film Studies program, also earning a 4.0 GPA.

    John is a 2009 graduate of St. Bernard School in Uncasville and is the son of JoAnn V. and Frank T. Francisconi.

    STUDENT FROM PAWCATUCK EARNS M.A. IN EARTH SCIENCE

    Pawcatuck - Tristan J. Kading of Pawcatuck has been awarded an M.A. in Earth and Environmental Sciences by Wesleyan University in Middletown, after completing his master's thesis on "Natural pollutant attenuation by schwertmannite at Copahue Volcano, Argentina."

    Kading, son of James A. Kading and Elizabeth Hannan Kading of Pawcatuck, is a 2003 graduate of Stonington High School.

    In 2007 he graduated cum laude from the University of Connecticut, where he was awarded a bachelor of science degree in the honors program with an individualized major in marine chemistry.

    Among his many achievements, Kading was a 2008-09 Connecticut Space Grant Graduate Fellow. He will enter the Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution joint program in the fall of 2010, in pursuit of a doctorate in chemical oceanography.

    LYME ACADEMY ALUMNI WINS FELLOWSHIP

    New London - The Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism has awarded Brad Guarino of New London, alumni of Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, an artist fellowship for fiscal year 2010.

    STUDENT FROM NORWICH HONORED AT AIC

    Norwich - Britany Whatley-Guilbert of Norwich, a freshman majoring in occupational therapy, received the Outstanding Achievement Award at American International College.

    NEW LONDON NATIVE RECEIVES YALE PH.D.

    New London - Matthew Bonser Johnson, son of Kenneth and Rosemary Johnson of Waterford, received a Ph.D. in neurobiology from Yale University May 24.

    His dissertation on the genetics of human brain development was published last year in Neuron, a major neuroscience journal.

    A native of New London, Matthew attended Harbor School and graduated from The Williams School in 1998.

    He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University and is a post-doctoral research fellow at Harvard.

    MYSTIC STUDENT JOINS PHI BETA KAPPA AT UNH

    Mystic - Andraya Ehrlich of Mystic, daughter of Susan and Owen Ehrlich, has been elected to the University of New Hampshire chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest scholarly honor society in the United States. She was a junior majoring in biology.
