New London - More than a month after he allegedly participated in the murder of Jorge Rosa, Davion Smith remains on the loose.

Police have said they will charge Smith, 18, of 93 State Pier Road, with murder, home invasion and first-degree burglary stemming from the Nov. 12 killing of the 25-year-old Rosa.

"The investigation of the murder of Jorge Rosa is an agency priority," Deputy Chief Marshall Segar said in an email Wednesday.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio said Wednesday he has been briefed on the investigation and is taking it "very seriously."

Police say Smith and Evan J. Holmes, 20, broke into Rosa's apartment at 252 Montauk Ave. at about 4 a.m. on Nov. 12 and shot Rosa in his bed.

Holmes was arrested at an Old Saybrook motel within hours of the shooting and is being held at Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in lieu of a $500,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear this morning in New London Superior Court for the fourth time since his arrest.

Meanwhile, Smith remains at large. Sources close to the investigation said his family is working with a lawyer and attempting to negotiate Smith's surrender to authorities.

Segar said New London police are working with other agencies at the local, state and federal levels to find Smith, who was attending New London High School. Immediately after the shooting, police said Smith may be hiding in the New Haven area.

Segar did not say whether Smith has friends or relatives in that area but said "harboring a wanted felon is a crime and anyone found to be assisting or hiding Smith may face arrest and prosecution."

Finizio said he had full confidence in the police department to "pursue (Smith) with full rigor." He said his office was making violent and drug-related crimes a high priority.

"Sometimes crimes of this nature take time to be solved, but as long as we remain diligent, they will be solved," Finizio said, "and those responsible will be brought to justice."

Police ask that anyone with information about Smith's whereabouts call (860) 447-5269.
