Natural gas customers back in service in Westerly

Westerly – Gas lines are purged and refilled and all of National Grid’s 1,600 customers that were without natural gas service now have access, town manager Steve Hartford said Saturday afternoon.

Less than 100 homes still have unlit pilots, Hartford said, but that’s because the occupants didn’t answer the door when technicians visited. Technicians left tags with a number to call, Hartford said, and a crew will be on-call until midnight tonight to come and relight those pilots.

Hartford said crews were finished by about 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

“They finished backfilling the excavation they did and repaved all the cuts in the pavement and everything looks great,” Hartford said. “All’s well and everyone’s got gas back for Christmas Eve.”

Hartford said he visited Vesta Bakery on Railroad Avenue, which he said had big Christmas orders to fill and had been delayed without gas.

“They were jumping with customers and it’s good to see them back in business,” Hartford said.

Hartford said he was pleased with the effort of National Grid in getting everyone restored.

“They did an outstanding job, both responding to a crisis and cleaning it up,” he said. “It looks like they were never here.”
