Bond reduced to $750,000 for one defendant in Norwich murder case

A New London judge on Thursday reduced from $1 million to $750,000 the bond of a man accused of taking part in the shooting death of Johnny Amy, but noted that bail for William A. “Trig” Long should remain high.

Amy, 25, of Norwich, was gunned down May 21 while walking near Franklin and Oak streets.

Long, 34, is accused of providing the shooter, Daquan “Q” Holmes, with a Ruger .22 pistol and throwing it out the car window after the shooting.

Amy, who died of a gunshot wound to the head, was not the intended target, according to court testimony. His father was in New London Superior Court Thursday when Long’s attorney argued for a bond reduction.

Long was arrested in September in Westerly and charged with murder, attempted murder and accessory to murder. Holmes, the accused triggerman, recently was sentenced in an unrelated case in New York and is expected to be extradited to Connecticut within three to six months, according to the state.

At Thursday’s hearing, attorney Peter E. Scillieri argued that Long’s bond was set in September based on “what little information was available to the court.” At a probable cause hearing in November, witnesses testified that Long retrieved the gun from his apartment and gave it to Holmes after a closing-time altercation at Chasers Bar.

“We know for certain now that Mr. Long didn’t shoot anybody,” Scillieri said. In the minds of jurors, he said, the person who did the shooting is the person who did the murder.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci said it is his experience that jurors will uphold the law, which holds that an accomplice can be held as responsible as the shooter.

Judge Patrick J. Clifford, who had ruled in September that there was probable cause to charge Long with murder, reduced the bond by $250,000 but said it should remain high.

“The state’s best case appears to be that they hope to prove the defendant obtained the gun for ‘Q,’’’ Clifford said.

Scillieri said he doesn’t expect Long to be able to post the bond.
