Removal of NFA weeping beech tree brings sentiment

Workers with Lindon Tree Service drag branches away to be chipped from the 160-year old weeping beech tree on the campus of Norwich Free Academy Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012.

Norwich - Dave Stone, arborist with Lindon Tree Service, removed limbs from the 160-year old weeping beech tree on the campus of Norwich Free Academy Wednesday.

Stone, who has been caring for the tree for more than 10 years says it breaks his heart to have to cut it down. "It's the most sentimental tree I've ever had to take down," he said. Faculty, staff, students and alumni of the school stopped by all morning to watch the work progress. The NFA board agreed Tuesday night that the tree, which dropped a half-ton limb recently, would have to be removed for the safety of those on campus.

Karissa Flanders, 15, who will start her junior year at Norwich Free Academy next week, walks away with a small branch from the 160-year old weeping beech tree on the NFA campus Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, as a crew from Lindon Tree Service removes limbs from tree.
