New London – A city man already in custody in relation to a string of burglaries throughout Waterford and New London was formally charged by both police departments for those crimes during a court appearance Tuesday morning.

Scott Tyrone, 32, of 615 Bank St., Apt. B, allegedly stole about $66,000 worth of jewelry from one New London home during the September crime spree and is also implicated in the theft of a $15,000 diamond ring from a Waterford home.

Tyrone was charged by Waterford police with seven counts of third-degree burglary, four counts of third-degree larceny, fourth-degree larceny, two counts of third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree criminal mischief. New London police charged Tyrone with second-degree larceny and third-degree burglary.

Tyrone was already in police custody after a September arrest for sixth-degree larceny.

Tyrone told police his burglary spree was fueled by a heroin addiction and that he was under the influence of the drug during his crimes. New London police charged Tyrone with possession of heroin after police found 1.6 grams of the drug during a September search of his home and possession of drug paraphernalia after police found a pipe used to smoke crack cocaine in his home.

Among the cash, jewelry and electronics stolen, police also say Tyrone stole nearly 60 U.S. Treasury Bonds from one home worth about $5,000.

Police said much of the stolen items have been recovered. More arrests are anticipated, police said, and the burglaries remain under investigation.

Tyrone was held in lieu of a $130,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Dec. 13.
