After years of discussion, meetings, public hearings, false starts, and re-starts, the Max's Place retail development planned for Spencer Plains Road and the Boston Post Road will finally break ground next month.
Attorney David Royston, acting as agent for Max's Place, told the Board of Selectmen last week that project construction will begin on June 10, 2013.
The projected schedule has the new Big Y grocery store opening on July 1, 2014, and the new Kohl's Department Store by Oct. 1, 2014.
Also on tap to open in 2014 are two other retail stores already committed to locate there: Ulta Cosmetics (10,000 square feet) and Panera Bread.
At the same meeting, Royston asked the Board of Selectmen to authorize First Selectmen Carl Fortuna, Jr. to sign the modified sales agreement for Center Road West validated by a Jan. 2013 Town Meeting. Under the terms of the sales deal, the town receives payment for the land when the project has received local land use clearances and met their conditions. As a result, later this month, the town should receive a payment in excess of $400,000 from Max's Place to buy the undeveloped end of Center Road West.
