Water restored to customers after water main break in Groton

Groton — Water to roughly 40 Groton Utilities customers was restored around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after a water main break on Poquonnock Road earlier in the day had disrupted service.

Richard Stevens, general manager of the water division for Groton Utilities, said Thursday that specialized insertion valves were used to restore water. He said crews discovered the break at a specialized T connection, which was probably installed about 80 years ago. The break was discovered shortly after 9 a.m.

Poquonnock Road between South and Buddington roads was closed as crews repaired the water main, but has since been reopened. Crews didn't leave the area until 3:30 a.m. as the system had to be flushed, he added.

Stevens said repair work on the main is expected to continue throughout the weekend. He said at one point during the repair the main will have to be shut off, disrupting service to about six to eight customers. He said those customers will be warned in advance of the closure.
