Mystic - With its purchase and preservation of 34 acres of the Coogan Farm assured, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center has installed a large sign along Route 27 that marks the entrance to what will be known as the Nature & Heritage Center at Coogan Farm.
The sign, designed by Dennis O'Brien, owner of Maps and Wayfinding, was installed last week in front of the old farmhouse which will be renovated.
The center has purchased the land for $2.8 million, and set a $3.5 million fundraising goal to create a nature preserve and heritage center that will be open to the public.
The center has been clearing invasive plants from stone walls and foundations as part of the creation of a trail system that will link to existing nature center trails.
In addition to private donations, the nature center obtained grants of $500,000 from the state and $600,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
